Objectives
To explore male human papillomavirus (HPV) contemporary genotyping epidemiology and correlations to peniscopy, cytology, and histopatology.
Methods
Medical records of patients who had been ...submitted to HPV infection screening with genotyping, peniscopy, cytology, and histopathology in a period of 2 years were reviewed. Frequency analysis and correlations between the diagnostic tools were established.
Results
Genotype of 1132 men resulted in 69.2% (784) positivity for HPV DNA, 78% classified as high risk of oncogenesis. Co‐infections occurred in 429 (54.7%) and the most frequently identified types were HPV‐6, HPV‐42, and HPV‐16, in 133 (17%), 94 (12%), and 86 (11%) patients, respectively. Positive/negative predictive values of peniscopy, cytology, and histopathology were 83/31%, 92/32%, and 87/33%, respectively. As a result, though significant, the correlations between genotype and non‐molecular tests were poor.
Conclusions
In the current contemporary representative male cohort, over two thirds are positive for human HPV DNA, 78% of high risk and with over half co‐infections. Though significant, its correlation with non‐molecular tests is poor and while the positive predictive values of peniscopy, cytology, and histopatology are between 83% and 92%, their negative predictive values are as low as 31% to 33%.
The external otitis is defined as an inflammation of the dog external ear canal and it is considered a common disease in dogs. It is a disease of multifactorial etiology, where one of the main ...microrganisms associated to the illness is the Malassezia ssp. Therefore, this work aimed to determine the frequency of Malassezia spp. by auricular cytology in dogs that present clinical signs of external otitis. Were used 23 dogs attended in a veterinary clinic located in Sinop-MT. The material was collected using a dry swab, where each extremity was inserted in one of the auditory canal (right and left), which was rotated, removed from the ear and rolled on the glass slide. First the glass slide was microscopically observed (objective 4X), for viewing mites, and then, the sample was fixed by heat and stained with Panoptic. Once stained, the glass slide was examined (objective 40X and 100X). Among the 23 dogs evaluated, 60.9% were positive for Malassezia spp., 8.7% were positive for the Otodectes cynotis mite, and also 30,4% of the animals showed mixed infection with Malassezia ssp. and bacteria. With this study, it can be concluded that Malassezia ssp. was found more frequently in at the auditory canal of dogs with that presents external otitis, associated or acting alone, indicating the importance of this yeast in cases of otitis.

INTRODUCTIONParotid tumours, in addition to the wide variety of types, are histologically complex. Differentiating between benign and malignant tumours in preoperative diagnosis is important in ...deciding the type of surgery required. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a simple, quick, low-cost, low-invasive and well-tolerated tool used in the preoperative diagnosis of these tumours. MATERIAL AND METHODSwe calculated the sensitivity, specificity, predictive positive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of FNAC and computed tomography (CT) in the differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumours operated between 2010 to 2014 in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of the University Hospital Miguel Servet. RESULTSThe sensitivity of FNAC is 50%, while the specificity is high, at 98.7%. FNAC offers high reliability in the diagnosis of malignant tumours, despite its low sensitivity. However, when the diagnosis is indeterminate or benign, other than pleomorphic adenoma or Whartin tumour, the reliability to exclude malignancy decreases. CONCLUSIONThe low sensitivity of FNAC to differentiate malignant from benign parotid tumours, means that we cannot rule out other diagnostic tests, clinical symptoms and especially the intraoperative vision of each surgeon. Especially when the diagnosis is indeterminate. Nevertheless, it is a technique used in a systematised way and helps in pre-surgical decision-making.
Fine-needle aspiration cytology is a valuable method for preoperative assessment of head and neck tumors. However, its accuracy in detection of salivary gland masses is controversial compared with ...other methods. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of parotid gland masses.
Over a 10-year period, 126 parotid gland masses were resected. Retrospective chart reviews of 114 patients were performed. The results of FNAC and final histological diagnosis were compared and the accuracy of FNAC was determined.
Final histological evaluation revealed 11 malignant tumors and 103 benign lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common neoplasm (63%), followed by Warthin's tumor (17.5%). The sensitivity of FNAC in detecting malignant tumors was 73% and the specificity was 97%. Positive predictive value (PPV) was 73% and negative predictive value (NPV) was 97%. The overall accuracy of FNAC in detecting parotid masses was 95%. False-negative diagnosis was found in mucoepidermoid carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma whereas there was false-positive diagnosis in cases of pleomorphic adenoma and normal parotid gland tissue.
FNAC is a reliable minimally invasive diagnostic method with a high sensitivity in diagnosis of lesions in parotid glands. The sensitivity of detection of malignant tumors in parotid glands was low due to the biopsy technique used, and depended on tumor location. Postoperative complications decreased after superficial parotidectomy.
We have reported in a variety of mammalian cells the reversible formation of a filamentous actin (F-actin)-enriched aggresome generated by the actin toxin jasplakinolide (Lázaro-Diéguez et al., J ...Cell Sci 2008; 121:1415-25). Notably, this F-actin aggresome (FAG) resembles in many aspects the pathological Hirano body, which frequently appears in some diseases such as Alzheimer's and alcoholism. Using selective inhibitors, we examined the molecular and subcellular mechanisms that participate in the clearance of the FAG. Chaperones, microtubules, proteasomes and autophagosomes all actively participate to eliminate the FAG. Here we compile and compare these results and discuss the involvement of each process. Because of its simplicity and high reproducibility, our cellular model could help to test pharmacological agents designed to interfere with the mechanisms involved in the clearance of intracellular bodies and, in particular, of those enriched in F-actin.

He discovered fascia propria recti in 1899, which is important in total mesorectal excision which improves cancer treatment as well as outcomes. He played an important role in developing the neuron theory which states that the nervous system consists of multiple individual cells, called neurons, which currently stands as the basis of the impulse transmission of neurons. Waldeyer was also interested in cytology, where he made a substantial contribution, being the first who adopted the name "Chromosome". Therefore, he accelerated the progress of what it is now known as Genetics. In conclusion, starting from the Fascia propria recti and continuing with great discoveries in cytology and neuron theory, Wilhelm von Waldeyer represents a key person in what we today call medicine.
We followed the effects of a new SCIT with a chemically polymerized allergen Alt a1, evaluating the trend of clinical and functional parameters in an observational-prospective study.
42 children with ...AR and intermittent asthma sensitized to A.A.: 17 patients started SCIT (Modigoid
), and 25 continued symptomatic therapy. At the initial visit (T0), all patients performed total IgE (tIgE) and specific IgE (sIgE) for Alt a1, nasal nitric oxide (nFeNo), nasal cytology, anterior active rhinomanometry (AAR) and spirometry. After 24 months (T1), they repeated the same procedures as in T0.
Patients treated with Modigoid presented a statistically significant (
< 0.001) reduction of nFeNO (T0:1651.06 ± 149.18; T1: 1394.12 ± 108.98), tIgE (T0: 311.48 ± 144.18; T1: 164.73 ± 50.69), sIgE for Alt a1 (T0: 28.59 ± 12.69; T1: 19.54 ± 7.37), an improvement of nasal airflow (T0: 71.62 ± 8.66; T1: 95.12 ± 5.91), nasal eosinophils (T0: 20.59 ± 2.35; T1: 14.88 ± 1.65) and FEV1 (T0: 95.58 ± 7.91; T1: 116.64 ± 5.94).
The new SCIT for Alt a1 significantly improves AR symptoms from a subjective, objective point of view and laboratory and functional parameters.
Cervical-uterine cancer (CaCu) is a public health problem. Epidemiological studies have identified a close relationship between CaCu and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The purpose of this ...study was to perform the molecular detection of HPV, identification of mixed infections and the screening of CaCu through conventional cytology in an indigenous population of the high Andean highlands of Ecuador in order to correlate the data obtained with the presence of lesions. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 189 women between the ages of 21 and 65; who belonged to the community of Pilahuin in the province of Tungurahua, who assisted to gynecological check-ups. Data were analyzed with the EPI-INFO and SPSS statistical programs. Results: the average age of the participants was 35.2 years, most of the participants identified themselves as indigenous, in a stable relationship, multiparous, with a medium to low level of education and no paid work. The participants showed a favorable attitude towards the cervico-uterine cytology in 100% of the cases without showing a relation with age, level of education or civil status. HPV infection was positive in 10.5% of the participants, 70% of the patients had severe inflammation with a positive association with mixed bacterial infection. Resumen: El cáncer cervico-uterino (CaCu) constituye un problema de salud pública. Estudios epidemiológicos han identificado una estrecha relación entre el CaCu y la infección por el virus del papiloma humano (VPH). El objetivo del estudio fue realizar la detección molecular de VPH, identificación de infecciones mixtas y el tamizaje de CaCu a través de un estudio transversal a 189 mujeres entre 21 a 65 años pertenecientes a la comunidad de Pilahuin- Provincia del Tungurahua a las cuales se les realizó detección molecular de VPH y citología convencional. Los resultados fueron analizados con los programas EPI INFO y SPSS. Resultados: La edad promedio de las participantes fue de 35,2 años, en relación estable, multíparas, con un nivel medio, bajo de instrucción, sin trabajo remunerado. El 100% de las participantes presentó una actitud favorable frente a la citología cervico-uterina sin mostrar relación con la edad, nivel de instrucción o estado civil. El 10,5% de las participantes presentaron infección por VPH y un 70% de las pacientes presentaron inflamación severa con una asociación positiva a infección bacteriana mixta.
