Landscape or nature quality has become a key concept in relation to nature policy and landscape planning. In the first part of the article it is argued, that these qualities should not be conceived ...as mere expressions of private or subjective preferences. Even though there may not be any `objective' or `scientific' method dealing with them, they are still values which can be shared, reflected on, and discussed in a reasonable way. The connoisseurs are introduced as experienced persons, who are particularly capable of identifying different kinds of qualities, bridge builders between cognition and evaluation. The second part of the article deals with four central sets of landscape or nature qualities: qualities related to species diversity, qualities related to the `atmospheres' and characters of places, pictorial qualities, and qualities related to narrativity. It is argued that experience of these and similar qualities are an important part of human flourishing, and that they should therefore all have a prominent place in landscape planning.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Some history and modern practice of Process Control in metallurgical operations is reviewed. Clearly the early deliverables from the pioneer days in the 1950s through to the 1970s and early 1980s ...were under-appreciated. The discipline has since grown into a more visible, sophisticated and accepted practice as a result of the assembly of appropriately recruited and trained individuals and teams, who have successfully negotiated deliverable projects that impact all metallurgical performances beyond early milling processes. The skill set in these individuals and teams essentially includes organisational behaviour in addition to their specialist technical attributes. A strong network to internal and external specialists and experts is essential. Furthermore, instrumentation and control technology has improved immensely. The challenge in the current modern practice is to win support of senior management in operations for the project cost, schedule and deliverables of Process Control. Once gained, this acceptance then amounts to the logistics of project scope and delivery—a track record well-demonstrated by the Xstrata Process Control Group.
This article argues that painting and its theory founds and subtends the discipline and practices of the history of art. It proposes this epistemological situation as a problem for visual culture. ...The article begins by locating the centrality of painting as intellection in the person and work of Leonardo da Vinci and in the writing on him by Paul Valéry and Walter Benjamin. An investigation of the inheritance of Leonardo da Vinci in the 17th century follows, in order to historicize his exemplarity both in early 20th-century art theory and in the dissipating aura associated with painting. The emergence of the ‘art book’ in the 17th century in Italy and France, particularly the first edition of Leonardo’s Treatise on Painting, is seen as significant in the transformation of the image and its power to represent through the materiality and characteristics of the book. This transformation, the basis of ‘the trouble with painting’, occurred amongst an elite group of connoisseurs, prelates, and aristocrats. Using images and subject matter drawn from early ‘art books’, the article revises the theories of representation in painting found in Michel Foucault and Louis Marin, among others, in order to understand more clearly what has been at stake in the espousal of the visual and the verbal in the genealogy of the literature on art.

This paper proposes ``class criticism from a perspective of knowledge``(in short, ``knowledge criticism``), as a new viewpoint and method of class criticism. The knowledge criticism focuses on the ...revelation of teacher`s knowledge during the class. Therefore, the critic follows up and appreciate the teacher`s behaviour, and then represents the quality and meaning of it. There are several methodological codes in knowledge criticism; connoisseur of connoisseurship, teacher as a main agent, unit and context, experience and reconstruction of knowledge, and selection of representation forms. These methodological codes are useful for perceiving, appreciating and evaluating the revelation of teacher`s practical knowledge during a class. To demonstrate the reality of knowledge criticism, this paper analyzes two class criticism cases, Ahn`s and Suh`s. The knowledge criticism can provide educational practitioners a new method in representing and transacting teachers` professional.
Opera wielded a seductive power over its audiences in late imperial China. As revealed in these two Chinese-style limericks, or “bamboo-branch ditties” (zhuzhici), which were recorded early in the ...nineteenth century, the allure of the world of theater and the charm of its performers could lead literate men to squander their money on doggerel written in praise of actors and could turn wealthy men into pitiful fools for love.
The first limerick offers a tongue-in-cheek assessment of texts known as huapu, texts that evaluated the looks and talents of opera actors. Huapu came into vogue in the last quarter of
There have been a large amount of research on topic tracking and detecting bursts in topics. However, there has been little research on predicting bursts in the future. We propose a method for ...predicting bursts of threads in a Bulletin Board System (BBS) using a kind of user. We call the kind of the user a ldquoconnoisseurrdquo. A connoisseur is a user who comments early in a thread which will burst in the future. We believe a thread in which connoisseurs appear has a high possibility of bursting. We calculated the degree of a user becoming a connoisseur from past data. Then we predicted bursts of threads based on the comments of connoisseurs. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method using data from ldquoYahoo! bulletin boardrdquo and showed its usefulness.
Concerning the byzantine art copies in Istanbul. The Russian émigré artists and the Byzantine institute of America.
Created in 1930 by the american archaeologist Thomas Whittemore, the Byzantine ...Institute of America was, in the thirties, in charge of the tracing, restoration and publication of St Sophia of Constantinople’s mosaics. This Institute’s history nevertheless dates back to the early twenties, since its destiny is closely linked with the presence in Istanbul of a large colony of émigrés, including some artists haring fled the Bolshevist Revolution. Owing to their artistic practise attached to the traditional values of the orthodox world, they wished to pass on a special sensibility, in order to clear the ground towards Byzantium’s reception in Occident. The present article is devoted to some of these artists, especially Izmailovitch and Kluge who, working as copyists, played a significant part in Byzantium’s reception in Occident. Through their skills, the Americans were able to appropriate the RAIK’s experience (Russian Archaeological Institute of Konstantinoupolis, closed in 1914 because of Turkey’s joining in the First World War) and build their activities in direct continuation with their illustrious predecessor. The present article is based on the analysis of some unpublished documents preserved in the archives of Bordeaux, Paris, St Petersburg and Moscow, and wishes to contribute to the history of art history.
