A fresh perspective on the seamy side of history. Maria Nicolaou has done considerable research into the largely unexplored area of divorce and marital separation from the Tudor period to the early ...Victorian era. Divorced, Beheaded, Sold is full of scandalous, little-known stories of wife sale, marital discord and audacious escapades of errant spouses, this is an interesting, as well as informative read in the same vein as Maureen Waller's The English Marriage and Kate Summerscale's Mrs Robinson's Disgrace. Maria Nicolaou reveals how people ended their marriages in the days before divorce was readily available - from committing bigamy to selling a wife at market. Her book is full of colourful characters and warring spouses, like Con Philips, who fought off her husband with a gun filled with firework powder; the Duke of Grafton, who hired an army of detectives to spy on his wife and obtain proof of her adultery; and Marion Jones, who recruited a gang to take back her property from her husband.
High specific Young’s modulus steel reinforced by κ-carbides has the characteristics of high strength and low density, which introduces potential applications of this material in automotive parts ...with a stiffness requirement. In this work, a 780 MPa grade Fe-Al-C high specific Young’s modulus steel was developed, and the addition of high contents of carbon and aluminum introduced a large fraction of κ-carbides into the steel matrix. To improve the ductility of this steel, a divorced eutectoid transformation (DET) treatment was adopted to regulate the microstructure of κ-carbides. A detailed evolution of κ-carbide during DET was investigated by staged quenching and microstructure characterization. It has been found for the first time that the κ-pearlite transformation and κ-carbides precipitation were mainly completed in the early stage during slow cooling, and the spheroidization of κ-carbides was mainly completed in the later stage. In addition, the effect of DET parameters on the microstructure evolution was analyzed, and it was found that a better spheroidization effect of carbides can be obtained at a lower cooling rate.
The number of older people who experience marital break-up has increased in many Western countries. However, limited empirical attention has been given to the study of the consequences of later-life ...divorce or separation. Previous studies on gray divorce are often cross-sectional and tend to capture a mix of short- and long-term effects of divorce and possibly selection effects into divorce. Drawing on data from nine waves of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (2009/2010-2017/2018), we analyze the effect of marital break-up on the mental health of 909 adults aged 50 or over to test the crisis model and the chronic strain model of divorce. We use fixed effects linear regression models to account for time-invariant confounders and distinguish between pre- and post-divorce effects. Our results indicate that older adults' depressive symptoms (GHQ) increase in the years before and upon union dissolution. After separation, depressive symptoms decrease and return to approximately previous baseline levels. Our analyses on heterogeneity in the effects of gray divorce show that post-divorce adjustment is faster for childless adults than for parents. We find no evidence that adjustment after gray divorce is slower for women than for men, or for persons who already experienced a prior union dissolution than for those who separate for the first time. The results are consistent with the crisis model of divorce but in contrast with the chronic strain model of divorce. Older adults are able to adjust to marital break-up, and their fertility histories tend to moderate the negative effect of later-life divorce on mental health.
•We study the effect of divorce on mental health among adults aged 50 or over.•We use nine waves of longitudinal data on British households.•Depression score increases around gray divorce and recovers afterward.•Adjustment is slower for older parents than for the childless.
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of divorced women in adjusting to divorce. Methods: The qualitative research method of phenomenology was used in this study. The ...statistical population included divorced women in Shiraz in 2019-2020. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants. Finally, ten divorced women were selected using semi-structured interviews and theoretical saturation. All interviews were recorded and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Results: The results of the qualitative data analysis revealed the main themes and 12 sub-themes. The main themes were 1) family as an effective source in achieving adjustment, 2) individual resilience, and 3) social resilience. The theme of family as an effective source in achieving adjustment included the two sub-themes: emotional support, material support, and the individual resilience theme comprised the five sub-themes of mourning, spirituality, accepting divorce, moving towards excellence, and controlling emotions. The theme of social growth included the three sub-themes of social communication management, economic stability, and job consolidation. The findings of this study indicate the need for thorough attention to the issues of divorced women after divorce and effective measures to empower them to achieve post-divorce adjustment.
