Background
We examined a new method to encourage interviewees to say more, the ghostwriter method, and examined its effect on eliciting information and cues to deceit.
Method
A total of 150 truth ...tellers and liars either told the truth about a trip they made in the last 12 months or pretended to have made such a trip. They were allocated to a Control condition, a ‘Be detailed’ condition in which they were encouraged to report even small details and a ghostwriter condition in which they were told to imagine talking to a ghostwriter. The dependent variables were details, complications, common knowledge details, self‐handicapping strategies, proportion of complications, plausibility, and verifiable sources.
Results
The ghostwriter condition elicited more details and revealed in plausibility a stronger cue to deceit than the other two conditions.
Conclusion
The ghostwriter method appears to be a promising tool for eliciting information and cues to deceit.
Introduction
Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a multidimensional process that involves personal (cognitive and emotional), behavioral, and contextual components. Teachers, as mediators in ...socialization, can influence SRL in various direct and indirect ways: by instructing students on effective learning strategies and structuring the learning environment. Most teachers agree that students should be helped to become self-regulated in their learning, however, they are unsure of how to do this, which is why they encourage it to a limited degree. Therefore, the objectives of the research were: (1) to examine how much teachers know about SRL, to what degree and how they encourage it in students; (2) to examine the differences in encouraging SRL with regard to gender, seniority, type of school and status of school subjects they teach.
Method
The research was conducted using an online questionnaire at two measurement points. A total of 251/179 primary and secondary school teachers in Croatia participated in the study. To assess teaching knowledge and methods of encouraging SRL, the questionnaire employed both open-ended questions (“Provide your own subjective definition of self-regulated learning.”; “How you promote self-regulated learning in your practice? Which approaches are most effective?”) and the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) Encouragement Scale (encouragement of learning planning and learning organization strategies, metacognitive monitoring of learning, elaboration and evaluation, understanding and effort investment).
Results
Teachers only partially know what self-regulated learning constitutes. About two-thirds of teachers have heard of the SRL, but only 14% accurately defines the construct. When defining SRL, they most often emphasize independently regulated/directed learning, and the definitions are mostly partially correct. On the other hand, teachers estimate that they encourage SRL to a significant extent. There are certain discrepancies in the data regarding the methods of encouraging SRL depending on the methodology (qualitative/quantitative). Teachers encourage SRL to a limited extent and provide implicit and indirect SRL encouragement. The results indicate that female teachers and teachers in humanities encourage SRL to a greater extent when compared to natural science and technical subject teachers, and the same goes for elective subject teachers when compared to compulsory subject teachers.
Discussion
The results have theoretical, but also great practical implications when it comes to the implementation of this multidimensional and complex construct in the educational system. They corroborate the theoretical foundations of SRL and SRL encouragement, whilst indicating the need for improving teachers’ knowledge and competencies in regard to SRL encouragement in students.
Background & Purpouse: The success of knowledge-based organizations requires the promotion of creativity and innovation, and sometimes it requires the courage to act beyond the redundant ...and cumbersome bureaucratic rules. Thus, the present study has dealt with the role of authoritarian leadership in encouraging creative deviation among employees by encouraging them to dare. Methodology: This is an applied and descriptive survey research. The statistical population consisted of employees of knowledge-based organizations in Lorestan Province, Iran, of whom 309 employees were selected as a statistical sample. The data collection tool used in this study was a questionnaire. In fact, its validity was assessed by content validity method, and its reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha method. The data was analyzed by structural equation modeling using Smart Software Pilates and SPSS. Findings: Authoritarian leaders make a positive and significant effect on moral deviation both directly and through employees' assertiveness. Conclusion: Managers of knowledge-based organizations can strengthen the capacity and daring of employees to think and act beyond the existing bureaucratic constraints, and thus this will lead to enhancing their creative and innovative performance.
Food production faces significant challenges, mainly due to the increase in the Earth’s population, combined with climate change. This will create extreme pressure on food industries, which will have ...to respond to the demand while protecting the environment and ensuring high food quality. It is, therefore, imperative to adopt innovative technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, in order to aid in this cause. To do this, we first need to understand the adoption process that enables the deployment of those technologies. Therefore, this research attempts to identify the factors that encourage and discourage the adoption of Artificial Intelligence technologies by professionals working in the fields of agriculture, livestock farming and aquaculture, by examining the available literature on the subject. This is a systematic literature review that follows the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The research was conducted on 38 articles selected from a pool of 225 relevant articles, and led to the identification of 20 factors that encourage and 21 factors that discourage the adoption of Artificial Intelligence. The factors that appeared most were of economic nature regarding discouragement (31.5%) and product-related regarding encouragement (28.1%). This research does not aim to quantify the importance of each factor—since more original research becoming available is needed for that—but mainly to construct a list of factors, using spreadsheets, which could then be used to guide further future research towards understanding the adoption mechanism.
We explore the use of text message reminders to improve student performance. The effectiveness of text messaging reminders is examined by comparing two large sections of a course where students ...focused on personal branding. One section received deadline reminders by email, while the other section received opt-in text reminders. The results of the study provide empirical support that text reminders are positively related to assignments turned in on time, perceived task mastery orientation, perceived confidence with course material, and overall performance in the class. In addition, a description of how the text service can be employed in a marketing course is provided.
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have gained prominence across the globe as a way of gaining competitive advantage and boosting the profit of the companies. The Indian pharmaceutical industry has ...readily embraced M&As in the recent times and has witnessed a number of profitable deals materialize, while some indeed failed. The success of M&As is contingent upon a variety of factors and eventually has a bearing on how the acquiring and target companies perform. This study intended to identify the various factors that either lead to or impede M&As and to measure their impact on company performance. The factors that motivate and discourage M&As were identified and the importance of factors such as deal size and compulsory licensing requirement in M&A success was assessed and the impact of the all these factors on the performance of the companies was assessed using both primary and secondary data. The encouraging and discouraging aspects of M&A were found to impact company performance significantly, so did the deal size and compulsory licensing requirement. The findings implied that the success of M&As depends on a variety of positive and negative factors and the participating companies need to balance these factors judiciously in order to obtain realistic profits from M&As
Since at least as far back as the infamous Derek Bentley case of the 1950s in which an unarmed 19-year-old was convicted and executed for murder based on his alleged uttering of the words
let him ...have it
to his gun-wielding accomplice, the issue of incitement has been positioned firmly as an object of interest for forensic linguists. An example of a language crime—i.e. an unlawful speech act (as reported by Shuy in Language crimes: The use and abuse of language evidence in the courtroom, Wiley Blackwell, Hoboken, 1993) the features of incitement—formalized as
intentionally encouraging or assisting others to commit an offence
in the law of England & Wales under section 44 of the Serious Crime Act 2007 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2007/27/contents)—have been widely debated by linguists and legal scholars alike. This paper draws on two webinars hosted by The Hunting Office in August 2020, which were subsequently leaked by the Hunt Saboteurs Association. Featuring senior figures from the hunting community addressing a nationwide audience of hunt masters, the webinars led to a police investigation and subsequent prosecution and conviction of one of the main speakers, Mark Hankinson, for
encouraging or assisting others to commit an offence under the Hunting Act 2004
. In this paper I explore what, linguistically, is meant by
encouraging or assisting
. Through corpus-assisted pragmatic and discourse analyses I interrogate the webinars to address the question of how precisely Hankinson implied his encouragement of illegal hunting with dogs. The phenomena of collocation and semantic prosody are crucial for understanding how such meanings came to be attached to the contributions Hankinson makes to the webinars. Moreover the paper will examine the contributions of other speakers and demonstrate that the same incriminating linguistic patterns in Hankinson’s talk are also evident in that of those who were not prosecuted.
Purpose
The purpose of this study was identifying factors that encourage property tax payment among property owners, specifically from the residential property segment within the Malaysian context. ...This aim is derived from existing evidence which clearly indicates a steady annual increase in property tax arrears from non-complying property owners as reported by the local governments (LGs).
Design/methodology/approach
This research was conducted using a survey method where a questionnaire was used as the research instrument in garnering the necessary study data. The collected data was analyzed through quantitative means towards gleaning study findings to fulfil the set objectives. The analyses used within this study were reliability analysis, descriptive analysis and factor analysis.
Findings
Research findings indicate that there are five factors that encourage property tax payment, namely, the proactive action capability of LGs; stimulation of payment; quality of staff and service; reliable tax foundation and governance; and smart expenditure. The identification of these factors has the potential to act as a mitigation mechanism for LGs to alleviate the issue of property tax arrears.
Research limitations/implications
The findings of this study may be used by LGs in developing a comprehensive action plan to encourage property owners to pay taxes. The study findings are exploratory in nature, based on the locality of the LG selected in this study, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). As such, the findings may not be considered as a generalization of the property tax situation throughout Malaysia as study data was only collected from the administrative region of MBPP. However, these findings can still be used as a basis in establishing similar studies within other LGs which demonstrate similar characteristics with MBPP.
Originality/value
In the Malaysian scenario, the focus of the previous studies on property tax arrears revolves around actions that have been taken by LGs to encourage the payment of property tax. However, in this study, the determination of encouraging factors is no longer referred to LG perspectives but was investigated from the taxpayer dimension. This approach allows new mitigating ideas to be developed and adds value in the context of a different perspective towards establishing a more practicable action plan in reducing property tax arrears.
