Family communication with all its specificities has a significant impact on the functioning of its members. This means that the effects of family communication are woven into all segments of the life ...and work of the persons who make up the family community. Emphasizing the importance of family education, the aim of our research was to use empirical non-experimental research to examine the connection between the types of family communication and the success of students in mathematics in the fifth grade. 161 fifth-grade students from two Banja Luka schools and the same number of parents participated in the research. Statistical significance was determined between the final grade in mathematics and violent and nonviolent communication and between autocratic and democratic communication and the final grade in mathematics, as well as between violent and nonviolent communication and success on the knowledge test and school achievement in mathematics.
Providing Iraqi students with proficiency in English is the ultimate goal of the educational system which is a way of getting knowledge in the fields of arts, sciences, transferring knowledge and ...sciences to other communities. Therefore, conducting such a type of study is very important because the contents of English textbooks have a huge influence on learning of the students. Once the content of English textbooks contain errors as the correct one, this will effect on his/her learning. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the new course entitled “English for Iraq” for fifth grade students for secondary schools, by Olivia Johnston and Mark Farell. It aims to answer eleven questions relating to the following domains: strength, objectives, appearance, design and illustration, language components, social and cultural context, accompanying materials, teaching methods, language skills, teachability, and practice and testing. The sample which is randomly chosen consists of (64) English language teachers, Baghdad Al-Rusafa 2nd. A survey checklist employed as an instrument of the present study. The major results showed that English teachers of Baghdad Al-Rusafa 2nd were satisfied with only seven domains of the checklist out of eleven. They are: the general appearance, design and illustration, accompanying materials, social and cultural context, teaching methods, practice and testing, and language components.
Background Health has effects on children’s academic performance. Qi deficiency is generally used to assess an individual’s health in the Chinese traditional medicine theory. This study explores the ...effects of qi deficiency on children’s academic performance and examines whether mental fatigue mediates these effects. Methods A total of 550 students aged 10–13 in fifth-grade were surveyed in a big primary school in Sichuan Province in November 2023 using paper-pencil-based questionnaires. Qi deficiency and mental fatigue were assessed, and exam scores in Chinese and Mathematics were recorded. Pearson’s correlation and linear regression analyses were used to test the mediation model and hypotheses. Results The fifth-grade students had mild qi deficiency (M = 2.09) and a mild state of mental fatigue (M = 2.38) on a five-point Likert scale. The average exam scores in Mathematics and Chinese were 70.07 and 74.44 points out of 100, respectively. Qi deficiency was associated with Mathematics scores ( r = −0.37, p < 0.01) and Chinese scores ( r = −0.30, p < 0.01), and mental fatigue ( r = 0.47, p < 0.01). Furthermore, mental fatigue was associated with Mathematics scores ( r = −0.46, p < 0.01) and Chinese scores ( r = −0.34, p < 0.01). Linear regression analyses showed that qi deficiency significantly predicted Mathematics scores ( β = −0.26, p < 0.01), Chinese scores ( β = −0.19, p < 0.01), and mental fatigue ( β = 0.41, p < 0.01). When qi deficiency was controlled for, mental fatigue significantly predicted Mathematics scores ( β = −0.28, p < 0.01) and Chinese scores ( β = −0.17, p < 0.01). Conclusion The mediation model and hypotheses were well supported, indicating that mental fatigue mediated the influence of qi deficiency on academic performance of fifth-grade students. Furthermore, the mediation effect of mental fatigue on Mathematics scores was a little stronger than that on Chinese scores.
This study examines concurrent teacher-student interaction quality and 5th graders' (n = 387) engagement in mathematics classrooms (n = 63) and considers how teacher-student interaction quality ...relates to engagement differently for boys and girls. Three approaches were used to measure student engagement in mathematics: Research assistants observed engaged behavior, teachers reported on students' engagement, and students completed questionnaires. Engagement data were conducted 3 times per year concurrent with measures of teacher-student interaction quality. Results showed small but statistically significant associations among the 3 methods. Results of multilevel models showed only 1 significant finding linking quality of teacher-student interactions to observed or teacher-reported behavioral engagement; higher classroom organization related to higher levels of observed behavioral engagement. However, the multilevel models produced a rich set of findings for student-reported engagement. Students in classrooms with higher emotional support reported higher cognitive, emotional, and social engagement. Students in classrooms higher in classroom organization reported more cognitive, emotional, and social engagement. Interaction effects (Gender × Teacher-student interaction quality) were present for student-reported engagement outcomes but not in observed or teacher-reported engagement. Boys (but not girls) in classrooms with higher observed classroom organization reported more cognitive and emotional engagement. In classrooms with higher instructional support, boys reported higher but girls reported lower social engagement. The discussion explores implications of varied approaches to measuring engagement, interprets teacher-student interaction quality and gender findings, and considers the usefulness of student report in understanding students' math experiences.
The Holistic Evidence and Design (HEAD) study of U.K. primary schools sought to isolate the impact of the physical design of classrooms on the learning progress of pupils aged from 5 to 11 years ...(U.S. kindergarten to fifth grade). One hundred fifty-three classrooms were assessed and links made to the learning of the 3,766 pupils in them. Through multilevel modeling, the role of physical design was isolated from the influences of the pupils’ characteristics. This article presents analyses for the three main subjects assessed, namely, reading, writing, and math. Variations in the importance of the physical design parameters are revealed for the learning of each subject. In addition to some common factors, such as lighting, a heavy salience for Individualization in relation to math becomes apparent and the importance emerges of Connection for reading and of Links to Nature for writing. Possible explanations are suggested. These results provide a stimulus for additional finesse in practice and for further investigation by researchers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the students’ performance improvement in the fifth grade of a primary school in Greece in the subjects of Language, Mathematics, Science, Geography and ...History with the support of open educational resources (OER). A quasi-experimental approach was used for the data collection due to the inability to collect data from a random sample. Sixteen students from a fifth-grade class participated in the experimental group and sixteen from other fifth-grade glass class in the control group. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Schapiro-Wilk's normality test, Levene's test for equality of variances and covariance analysis (ANCOVA). The results of data analysis showed that the post-test students' performance in Language, Mathematics and Science subjects was statistically significant with ANCOVA. On the contrary, the performances in Geography and History seem to be statistically not significant.
Nutritional status can be measured through the adequacy of nutrients obtained from food which are digested every day. The increasing number of healthy food absorbed by the body can increase the ...physical fitness of the body. The purpose of this research was to do counseling in order to understand the nutritional status and physical fitness level of fifth grade student at Tunas Harapan Islamic Elementary School in Sendangmulyo, Tembalang, Semarang. The physical fitness level was measured using nutritional status and physical fitness test (TKJI). The data were obtained using descriptive method with measurement and test techniques. These data were obtained from measurement of height, weight, age, and physical fitness tests (TKJI). This study found that the nutritional status of fifth grade students in Tunas Harapan Islamic Elementary School were included in normal nutrition category and moderate physical fitness level.
Five fifth-grade teachers used generous reading to expand their perspectives on student writing beyond the rubric-based writing assessment. Their discussions were recorded and compared to discussions ...of four fifth-grade teachers who did not use generous reading. Writing test scores of 61 student were also analyzed. Qualitative analysis revealed the five generous reading teachers addressed additional elements of writing beyond those addressed by the other teachers. Both groups of teachers expressed more negative judgements of African American writing, while empathizing with English learner writing. A discussion of rubric assessment and linguistically diverse student writing includes implications for instruction.

Harmful use of digital technologies is increasing among different age groups in society, especially children. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to this issue and educate families to empower ...them to deal with this issue properly. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of family education on digital game addiction. The method of the present study was quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test design and witness group. The statistical population of this study included male students of the fourth and fifth grades of Farid School in Ramsar city in the academic year of 2019-2020. Those had a cut point above 90 in Videogame Addiction Scale for Children (VASC) were selected and randomly assigned to experimental (n = 20) and witness (n = 20) groups. First, in the pre-test stage, the Videogame Addiction Scale for Children (Yilmatz, Griffiths, & Ken, 2017) was performed on both groups. The experimental group then takes a family education course. At the end of the training period, post-test was performed again in both groups and the data were analyzed using analysis of covariance and SPSS software version 24. The results showed that the mean of digital game addiction and its components in the experimental group decreased significantly compared to the control group (p <0.05). According to the findings, it can be concluded that family education is effective in reducing addiction to digital games. Therefore, designing and implementing training courses for families can be helpful in reducing their children's harmful use of such new electronic technologies.
