The paper presents a formal account of sentences with a numeral-nominal subject and an adjectival complement, such as Tych pięciu facetów zostało zabitych ‘These five guys were killed’. The ...agreements in such sentences are highly idiosyncratic. To cope with them in the framework of a certain formal grammar of Polish, a number of extra means are proposed: special “numeral” realization of the nominal phrase in subject position, special “plural” adjectival complement, special rules that introduce the adjectival phrase in genitive, special valence frames for such strange phrases, and, finally, a special mechanism of interphrasal gender-number agreements. The paper argues for individual treatment of idiosyncrasies, instead of an artificial account in terms of general principles.
Delimitation as a limitation. Research into the word order of the adjectival modifier in contemporary Polish The article examines the problem of migration of so-called classificatory adjectives in ...modern Polish, that can be used both pre- and post-nominally in NPs, such as e.g. drukarka atramentowa and atramentowa drukarka ‘ink printer’. It contributes to the discussion initiated by J. Linde-Usiekniewicz (2013), the purpose of which is to verify the results of research into reordering of the constituents of Polish NPs, conducted by Cetnarowska, Pysz, Trugman (2011) and Rutkowski, Progovac (2005). It is claimed that an explanation of this phenomenon must take into account the pragmatic determinant of word order flexibility. A number of facts indicate that the following principles play a crucial role in the reordering of NPs: the iconicity principle, more specifically, the “iconicity of sequence” (or “sequential order”) which holds that a sequence of forms conforms to the sequence of experience and, in this particular case, the hierarchical categorization; and the principle of presumed absorption which shows a strong correlation between the adjectival sequences in NPs and the presence of the evaluative predicative, for example nowoczesna drukarka atramentowa vs. nowoczesna atramentowa drukarka ‘modern ink printer’.
On the special status of associative conjunction predicates
In the word class of conjunctions, the paper discerns: (a) exponents of associative predicates, i.e. predicates which connect/link ...events/propositions by way of a simple association, (b) exponents of temporal links between events, and (c) exponents of causal links between events.
The author discusses certain special uses of Polish associative predicates formalized as conjunctions, and concludes that they are also characteristic of the corresponding class of predicates in other languages. She emphasizes their domination in the oral communication and comments on their ability to appear in the secondary function of quasi-particles.
Idiosyncrasies in morphological agreement inside and outside phrases with numerals of the pięć ‘five’-type as a consequences of syntactic agreement failures
The paper discusses some problems inherent ...in the hypothesis on which numerals are heads that have a valued feature of case in nominative and accusative contexts. In the analysis offered here numerals and quantifiers are phrasal adjuncts in the extended projection of the noun whose head is a null functional category. 3 person, singular number and neuter gender verb morphology as well as alternating patterns of the morphology of pre-numeral and predicative adjectives reflect attempted but (partly) failed syntactic agreement.
