Given the need to develop interventions that take account of psychosocial dimensions in the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), this article - which is the result of a collective reflection on these issues - proposes to address the relationship between the power to act and operational leeway in interventions. The starting point of our discussion is an intervention carried out in a home for the elderly which was experiencing a sharp increase in upper limb MSDs among its employees. The ergonomic intervention having allowed the demand to evolve towards new possibilities for dialogue on the quality of work, we ask how it is possible to develop the power to act of the operators in the field and the decision-makers so that together they will be developing “operational leeway” in real situations and in the organization of work.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has become a major problem at various facilities, and facilities for the elderly are no exception. If a positive person occurs, outpatient facilities will suspended, but ...inpatient facilities can not be suspended, and it will be necessary to deal with residents and positive people. The purpose of this study is to obtain knowledge that will lead to the prevention of the spread of COVID-19. I first clarify occurrence of COVID-19 cases in nursing homes for the elderly, and then consider responce after testing positive from differences in facility types.
In this study, a questionnaire survey of 309 nursing homes for the elderly and interviews with 10 of them were conducted. The results are as follows:1) The nursing homes for the elderly, which is ...supposed to support independent living in the community, are actually functioning as facilities for transitioning to welfare facilities or as final residences.2) Building plans must be able to accommodate both residents with complex difficulties and those who are elderly and require heavy nursing care. Examples of such plans include all private rooms, wide corridors, and mechanical baths.
An increasing age of respondents and cognitive impairment are usual suspects for increasing difficulties in survey interviews and a decreasing data quality. This is why survey researchers tend to ...label residents in retirement and nursing homes as hard-to-interview and exclude them from most social surveys. In this article, I examine to what extent this label is justified and whether quality of data collected among residents in institutions for the elderly really differs from data collected within private households. For this purpose, I analyze the response behavior and quality indicators in three waves of Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. To control for confounding variables, I use propensity score matching to identify respondents in private households who share similar characteristics with institutionalized residents. My results confirm that most indicators of response behavior and data quality are worse in institutions compared to private households. However, when controlling for sociodemographic and health-related variables, differences get very small. These results suggest the importance of health for the data quality irrespective of the housing situation.
Unit type nursing home for the elderly need to meet many facility standards. These standards may hinder a new attempt and renovation for unit type. The focus of this research is the standard of the ...proximity between the living room and the bedrooms because this standard is the main factor that limits the layout plan configuration in the unit. In the layout planning, not only the designer but also the municipal welfare departments that judge the plan is involved. The purpose of this study is to clarify the restrictions imposed by municipal welfare departments on the layout plan in unit type nursing home for the elderly. A survey of public documents and telephone interviews are conducted with 121 municipalities and analyzed. The number of official documents collected are 74 (61.2%), and the valid answers for interviews are 105 (86.8%). Restrictions on layout plans in units based on facility standards are classified into six types according to the combination of "adjacency rule" and "division of living room". That half of the municipalities restrict facilities, where living rooms are independent become clear from the result. On the other hand, the four municipalities do not impose any restrictions based on the facility standard, indicating that there are regional differences. Most municipalities do not publish restrictions on the layout plan, and the opacity of information is an issue to be solved. Also, positive and negative thoughts on the hall type, and the reasons, situations of the announcement, and influence on the layout plan are analyzed. Of the 14 municipalities that positively consider the hall type, 2 municipalities directly demand the hall type from the designer. Other municipalities, though not energetically demanding, may have indirectly affected the plan configuration. In addition, one municipality clearly shows that it is not legally binding, while describing it along with the reasons for taking it negatively. The selection criteria for open recruitment should be specified in the open recruitment materials so that they are not confused with the criteria for legally enforceable ordinances. Requests regarding the living environment described in the public documents are also analyzed, and the contents are clarified. Describing these requests about the living environment is one of the effective ways to improve the quality of the facilities in the area. However, of the 74 municipalities collected, only 9 municipalities described it in official documents. Buildings with high publicity, such as welfare facilities for the elderly, need to ensure a certain level of quality, but at the same time must improve the quality of each individual. For that purpose, the municipalities must first accurately describe the current policy in the materials and indicate it to the designers. Based on this, it is necessary to discuss each plan flexibly with designers and deepen mutual understanding.
The purpose of this study was to compare the values calculated using the Japanese Standard Tables of Food Composition 2015 (7th revision) and 2020 (8th revision) for energy and each nutrient in the ...menu offered at a special nursing home for the elderly, and to encourage use of the 8th revision in their nutritional management. The data used for analysis were menus, each consisting of 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and a snack) served over 96 days with the energy and nutrient values calculated using the 7th and 8th revisions of the Japanese Standard Tables of Food Composition. The total energy values per day as calculated using the 8th revision were 5.1% lower than those calculated using the 7th revision. In the case of protein, an important nutrient for energy production, the value based on the 8th revision, calculated from the amino acid composition, was 14.1% lower than that calculated from the nitrogen content using the 7th revision. These findings suggest that this special nursing home for the elderly underestimated the protein values for the dietary goal. However, as this study was limited to a single facility, further detailed examination using a wider range of subjects will be necessary.
In the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of desert Western Australia, older people are being encouraged to participate meaningfully in student education. This initiative is being led by two of the authors of this ...article, senior Ngaanyatjarra women, both of whom work with the Ngaanyatjarra Lands School with its campuses in eight remote communities spread over hundreds of kilometres. Elderly men and women, some of whom are residents in the Ngaanyatjarra Aged Care home (Ngaanyatjarra Health Service, 2021), are eagerly participating in the planning of bush trips, gathering their traditional resources, seeds, grinding stones, bush resins, recalling stories, songs, and dances—as they prepare for the bush camps with students. During the camps the schoolteachers step back and the elderly lead in what is known as two‐way science. At first glance, this work may look like it is simply focused on the educational needs of students with senior Yarnangu acting in a supporting role. However, this article will demonstrate the continuous connections and responsibilities, laid out in the Tjukurrpa (the Dreaming), between the old and the young, to their ancestral lands. It sets out how according to “Tjukurrpa thinking,” the principal way to provide good care is by helping senior people remain on country with family, pass on their knowledge to younger people, and thus keep strong languages and kurrunpa (people’s spirit) alive.
