This article attempts to define what contemporary globalization is and present opportunities and threats this process generates. The purpose of this paper is also to show how dynamically the reality ...in Europe is changing and how new threats associated with economy, management and other processes. The globalization processes of the economies worldwide and the dynamic development of trade and international cooperation create new conditions and threats, under which countries and social-political-economic organizations (e.g. EU) must operate.Experience over the last years has shown, that even the strongest supporters of openness to other values and culture, which are new for Europe, have revised their views, surprised by the scale of illegal immigrations and others EU security aspects.
Female genital cutting (FGC), a deeply rooted cultural practice with high prevalence rates in many West African countries, is considered by many to represent systematic gender-based violence and ...human rights violation. Although short- and long-term health consequences of FGC have been examined in studies in Africa, the experiences of women who have immigrated to the Western countries such as the United States have remained largely unexplored. We sought to examine prevalence rates of FGC, as well as differences in demographic characteristics, health outcomes, and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among West African immigrants. This study employed audio computer-assisted self-interviewing with a community-based sample of 68 women from Gambia, Guinea, Mali, and Sierra Leone living in New York City. The rate of FGC was 68% overall and varied significantly by country, tribe or ethnicity, and marital status. Women with FGC had a significantly higher number of live births and were more likely to report a history of vaginal pain and decreased sexual arousal, but there were no other significant differences in gynecological and obstetric outcomes, sexual functioning, or psychological outcomes. Participants also had similar rates of opposition to FGC, although women with FGC were less likely to assert human rights as a reason to end the practice. Women reported a high level of surprise and unpreparedness for the FGC procedure, and 22% reported that it was done without their parents' consent. Long-term health consequences of FGC among women who have immigrated remain unclear, although resistance to the practice is overwhelming.
To monitor the the genotype and subgenotype c of hepatitis C among the immigrations. To identify the new genotype and trace the transmission.
From 2009 to 2013, 235 positive Anti-HCV samples were ...collected from Sichuan, Liaoning, Guangdong, Shenzhen and Yunnan ITHC. Specific PCR primers were used to amplify the HCV Core, then the PCR products were sequenced by genetic analyzer. The genotypes were identified by aligning the GenBank reference sequences and constructing the phylogenetic tree of Core.
One hundred and twenty-nine samples showed HCV-RNA positive (54.9%) in 235 samples which were anti-HCV positive. We detected six kinds of genotypes in 115 cases of sequncing successfully, of which 72 cases of genotype 1 (G1, 62.6%), followed by G3 (18.2%), G2 (9.6%), G4 (6%), G6 (2.6%) and G5 (0.9%). Genotype 1b was the most common subtype, accounting for 47% of all infections. The phylogenetic tress indicated the HCV 4 strains in immigrations had high affinity with that in Egypt and Europe, while HCV 6 strains clos
Ageing in Spain has increased considerably and elderly people often find themselves in a situation of great dependence. Facing this situation, many have had the support of immigrant caregivers from ...Latin America. This research had the purpose to know the social representations (SR) of these caregivers, living in Valencia (Spain), about immigration, care and elderly care. It involved the participation of 35 immigrants who responded the Word Association Test and a socio-demographic questionnaire. The results revealed that the SR on immigration reflect "nostalgia", care was represented by "help", and care for the elderly by "respect". It is concluded that the SR allow understanding the symbolic, affective and cognitive activities in their process of social interaction. It is hoped that these findings will contribute to studies of migration at the international level, promoting positive changes for these groups.
On its route from the Mediterranean in the north to the Red Sea in the south, the Suez Canal crosses three different lakes which represent different habitats, and in some cases, hinder the migration ...of the fauna and flora from one sea to the other. Tintinnid species–specific abundance was determined at monthly intervals from 10 stations in the Suez Canal. A total of 18 species were recorded in the canal water, all Indo-Pacific in origin. Six of these species have been introduced to the Mediterranean, while 11 are new geographical records for the Suez Canal. Most species exhibited a seasonal cycle with low winter and high spring and summer densities. Tintinnid affinities and differences between the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea were discussed in the light of the results of distribution studies of the eighteen species of Tintinnid carried out over a complete year. These observations point to the role of the canal as a selective barrier and/or as a link in the migration of Tintinnid protozoa. While cases of migration from one sea to the other are more likely to occur in either direction, those concerning species of Indo-Pacific origin are more successful and numerous. Meanwhile, the Suez Canal acts as a local endemic habitat by itself.
Immigrant children and youth are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. However, relevant public policy is shaped ...less by informed discussion than by politicized contention over welfare reform and immigration limits.
From Generation to Generation explores what we know about the development of white, black, Hispanic, and Asian children and youth from numerous countries of origin. Describing the status of immigrant children and youth as "severely understudied," the committee both draws on and supplements existing research to characterize the current status and outlook of immigrant children.
The book discusses the many factors?family size, fluency in English, parent employment, acculturation, delivery of health and social services, and public policies?that shape the outlook for the lives of these children and youth. The committee makes recommendations for improved research and data collection designed to advance knowledge about these children and, as a result, their visibility in current policy debates.
Immigrant children and youth are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. Children of Immigrants represents some of ...the very best and most extensive research efforts to date on the circumstances, health, and development of children in immigrant families and the delivery of health and social services to these children and their families.
This book presents new, detailed analyses of more than a dozen existing datasets that constitute a large share of the national system for monitoring the health and well-being of the U.S. population. Prior to these new analyses, few of these datasets had been used to assess the circumstances of children in immigrant families. The analyses enormously expand the available knowledge about the physical and mental health status and risk behaviors, educational experiences and outcomes, and socioeconomic and demographic circumstances of first- and second-generation immigrant children, compared with children with U.S.-born parents.
Strangers No Moreis the first book to compare immigrant integration across key Western countries. Focusing on low-status newcomers and their children, it examines how they are making their way in ...four critical European countries-France, Germany, Great Britain, and the Netherlands-and, across the Atlantic, in the United States and Canada. This systematic, data-rich comparison reveals their progress and the barriers they face in an array of institutions-from labor markets and neighborhoods to educational and political systems-and considers the controversial questions of religion, race, identity, and intermarriage.
Richard Alba and Nancy Foner shed new light on questions at the heart of concerns about immigration. They analyze why immigrant religion is a more significant divide in Western Europe than in the United States, where race is a more severe obstacle. They look at why, despite fears in Europe about the rise of immigrant ghettoes, residential segregation is much less of a problem for immigrant minorities there than in the United States. They explore why everywhere, growing economic inequality and the proliferation of precarious, low-wage jobs pose dilemmas for the second generation. They also evaluate perspectives often proposed to explain the success of immigrant integration in certain countries, including nationally specific models, the political economy, and the histories of Canada and the United States as settler societies.
Strangers No Moredelves into issues of pivotal importance for the present and future of Western societies, where immigrants and their children form ever-larger shares of the population.
