This paper is based on a project work of the course ldquoPower Engineering Design Projectrdquo given by the Division of Electric Power Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden in Fall ...semester, 2008. The project has focused on simulating power system voltage collapse scenarios using Advanced Real-Time Interactive Simulator for Training and Operation (ARISTO) software. The simulated voltage collapse scenario was successfully implemented. To understand the effects of protection on voltage collapses, the study also focused on different ldquoblackout mitigationrdquo schemes to prevent the complete system blackout such as modification of settings of distance relays and blockings of critical circuit breakers on the transmission systems. The simulation results have shown that with these measures, substantial part of the system can be prevented from blackout. The Nordic 32-bus system is used in the study.
The aim of the paper is the analysis of the dynamic behavior of a thermoelectric power plant equipped with a steam unit and a gas turbine during the early phases of a black-start-up maneuver for the ...network restoration. Models of different detail level for two production units and the relevant regulators have been implemented into two simulation tools. The paper contains the description of the different models, identifies the cases in which the two simulation codes predict similar results and presents the main characteristics, as well as the fields of application of the two codes. As an example, the paper presents also an application of simulators developed for the planning and the preparation of island operation and start up field tests of a power station.

In this study, a three-stage optimisation method for distribution system load transfer scheme with consideration of the participation of distributed generations (DGs) is proposed. The algorithm aims ...to recover loads from the large-scale power outage caused by substation-complete-shutdown accidents (SCSAs), thus improving the power supply reliability. First, the principle of the SCSA load transfer strategy considering DGs and the secondary dispatch is introduced. The capacities of DGs were used to provide the additional power supply in grid-connected or island operations. Meanwhile, to relieve the stress of the backup substation for further load transfer, a secondary dispatch strategy is proposed to dispatch loads among the direct-connected and secondary-connected substations. Afterwards, a three-stage optimisation model is built to obtain the optimal load transfer scheme. The first-stage optimisation determines the island partitions in the unrecovered areas. The second-stage optimisation comprises a tie-line transfer model considering the load importance and the recovery time. The third-stage optimisation intends to determine the optimal secondary dispatch to achieve a better overall recovery rate. Case study results prove that the proposed three-stage optimisation method can improve the overall load recovery rate while ensuring the reliability of important loads and the operation safety of the system.
This paper proposes a risk-based approach for optimal allocation of automation devices in radial distribution networks with island operation of distributed generators considering load and generation ...uncertainty and variability. The presented approach is based on fuzzy sets concept, fuzzy mixed integer linear programming, and risk analysis. It enables obtaining a set of network automation plans and employs the maximal expected monetary value (max EMV) criterion to evaluate the risk and to select the best automation plan. In this way, the proposed approach provides a decision-maker with a means of determining the network automation plan which ensures the most effective response to load and generation uncertainty and variability and thus minimizes the risk of excessive interruption costs to customers (loads and generators).
While increasing integration of renewable energy sources (RES), which are unregulated and difficult to predict, a large system of nuclear power plants must provide balancing peaks in the production ...of renewable energy. It is also important to simulate the rapid changes in the power of individual NPP units, and for these regimes to train operators of nuclear units. Therefore the paper is aimed to Island Operations of More Parallel Electric Synchronous Generators Connected to One Substation of Power Grid. For the control of rapid and poorly predicted power peaks / deviations it is also necessary to use large Nuclear Power Plants. These control requirements are not yet required to NPP and therefore NPP Simulators can not be used for these purposes. Firstly, there are described the results of the Case Study: Engineering and Training Simulators for Large Conventional and Nuclear Power Plants. Initially there are presented the simulations of different island operations of power plant turbine generators connected to one substation into the power grid on the example of the Power and Heating Plant with six parallel operating synchronous generators. Generally the Power/Performance K-Factor (KF) are defined for the T&D Systems. K-Factor characterizes the electrical properties of the systems. On the simulator the instructor chosen size distribution system (i.e., KF) in which generators are electrically connected. For different island operations (whose electrical "hardness" depends on the size of KF) will be shown the results of the simulations on the Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) used for the training of parallel operations of two or more power turbine generators / blocks. The simulation models are created in MATLAB - SIMULINK. Secondly, a similar multi-block island mode will be also analyzed for a large Nuclear Power Plants.
