Tracing the lineage of territorial theorization, from legal container through dialectical, strategic and rhizomatic interpretations, this paper contends that more-than-human aspects of territory have ...been routinely circumvented by scholars seeking to avoid its realist, imperialist intellectual past. However, with the crisis of representation in political theory precipitated by the planetary ecological crisis, territory as a material entity has sprung alive again. This paper proposes that a reinvigorated materialist approach, informed by Deleuze and Guattari’s writings on territorial assemblages as machinic, nomadic and affective, can offer a way out of the territorial trap, reclaiming nomos from its conservative, masculine heritage.
A growing body of large-N cross-national studies has identified key predictors of environmental behavior. Adopting a social dilemma perspective, where individuals must choose collective over ...self-interest to act pro-environmentally, integrated national datasets for 30 countries are used to examine the effects of generalized trust, trust in government, leftism, and post-materialism on three types of environmental behavior (intended action, informal action, and formal action). At the individual level, all predictors but institutional trust have significant positive effects on each type of behavior. Institutional trust is associated with greater willingness to make economic sacrifice for the environment and with less frequent informal environmental behavior, but it is unrelated to formal behavior. However, at the country level, the effect of trust is limited to intended behavior and depends on the type of trust. Individuals in countries with higher generalized trust averages are less willing to sacrifice for the environment, and those in countries with higher averages of institutional trust are more willing to do so.
In this interview, originally published in the Czech journal Contradictions, John Bellamy Foster discusses the history of environmental thought among socialists from Marx to the present day, with a ...view to the need to mobilize in order to protect humanity's only home.

This introduction attempts to briefly trace the diverse cartographies and philosophical lineages of new materialism. It charts their multidirectional, multispecies, multidisciplinary orientations in ...the attempt to liberate conceptualizations of matter and materiality beyond the limits of anthropocentrism and dualistic frameworks of humanist scholarship. However, such attempts don’t remain completely free from contradictions and the introduction, therefore, simultaneously traces the dialogic and critical approaches within new materialist scholarship that accepts their limitations and urges on the necessity of continuous generation of newer ways of questioning and rethinking materiality. The introduction, therefore, attempts to remind that neither the question of matter nor the epistemological approaches of new materialism are one. With such a brief tracing of the essentially pluralistic character of new materialism, the introduction, therefore, gathers together the thematic concerns of this volume, and how the essays engage with cautious experimentations on what the doing of new materialisms in newer, non-western contexts can offer for a fresh re-examination of non-human matters as well as enabling newer ways of engaging with new materialist scholarships.
•Dispositional greed is significantly correlated with psychopathy.•Dispositional greed predicts a range of behavioral indicators of greedy behavior.•Dispositional greed has incremental validity over ...the Big Five domains and aspects.
Greed is a variable which might explain and predict a range of real-life criteria. Although often consulted as explanation in the public media, related scientific research has only recently begun. We approached greed from a personality psychology perspective regarding its nomological net and the prediction of theoretically related criteria. We found that a wide array of indicators, including behavior in economic games and risk games, as well as self-reported money investment and aimed at income, can be meaningfully predicted by dispositional greed, over and above the Big Five. Additionally, we found that dispositional greed is substantially related to psychopathy. According to our results, dispositional greed is an important variable which might explain unique variance with regard to theoretically related behaviors.
Although considerable attention has been paid to the “brand-as-partner,” the current research shows that the “brand-as-servant” is embraced by consumers whose value system facilitates a ...master-servant relationship in the quasi-social experiences provided by brand anthropomorphism. Four studies evince that differences in hierarchical structure inherent in brands working with (i.e., partner brands) versus working for (i.e., servant brands) consumers engender materialism to play a systematic role in determining consumer responses to being an equal partner versus dominating master in consumer-brand relationships. In particular, materialists respond more favorably to a servant brand than to a partner brand when the brand is anthropomorphized (vs. objectified), and they respond more favorably to an anthropomorphized servant brand than do nonmaterialists. This effect is actualized through traits of materialists, moderated by brand status and mediated by an activated desire to dominate the servant brand. This finding shows that partnership may not be the only meaningful relationship that consumers form with their brands.
This paper discusses the apparent amnesia with regard to insights manifested in ecofeminist thought and applies a re-collective analysis to thinking on the implications of an ecofeminist new ...materialism for contemporary environmental education research, and curriculum practice. We engage with a conversation between feminist new materialism and the tropes of ecofeminism at this very unusual time in human history, making visible such interactions. Drawing attention to this and other apparent amnesias and, arguing from a genealogical perspective, we argue the scholarly and conceptual disruption caused by rapidly changing environmental (hence social and cultural) conditions can be fruitfully understood and analysed through a reconceived new materialist ecofeminism. This is especially important given the unequal impact of the climate emergency on women and the continued absence of a truly coherent focus on women's interests - another amnesia - at this moment when the climate dominates all human and other than human life. In exploring the relationships between feminist new materialism, ecofeminism and the more-than-human, we theoretically + materially consider the conceptual challenges of confronting the climate emergency as viewed through the lens of articulating feminisms; and we promote possibilities for further conceptual and practical environmental education research.
To date, few studies have empirically examined specific values with respect to the global teenager hypothesis. In testing the global teenager hypothesis, this study investigates similarities and ...differences in materialism among 14‐ to 17‐year olds in China, Japan and the USA. Significant differences were found between respondents from the three nations for materialism and discretionary spending power. Discretionary spending power had a significant effect on materialism across nations. In addition, evidence supports cross‐national differences in the psychological structure of the materialism construct. While personal gain and social gain explain two materialism dimensions for the Japanese and American samples, factor analysis results suggest materialism may have alternative conceptual underpinnings in China. The findings of this study generally fail to support the global teenager hypothesis as it relates to the value of materialism.
