Silybum marianum has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Antimicrobial components with herbal origin are known for it's potential treatments. Aim of this study was in vitro assessment of ...antimicrobial effects of methanolic extract from dried fruits of Silybum marianum. Hungarian seeds of Silybum marianum were defatted by ethyl acetate. The flavonolignans were extracted with methanol. Antimicrobial effects of different dilution of methanolic extract (1000, 500, 250, 125 and 62.5 mg ml-1) were examined on seven species of microorganisms with three methods including disk diffuasion, well diffusion, porpelite method (as full can growth and table growth methods). According to results of this investigation, the extract had antibacterial effect on Bacillus Cereus, Bacillos Antracis and Streptococcus Pyogenes and no effect on Staphilcoccus aureus, Enterococcus Faecalis, Psodomonas Aeroginosa and Escherichia Coli. With attention to our finding, it is concluded methanolic extract of Silybum marianum has antibacterial effects on a number of current clinical pathogens microorganisms and it must be evaluated in vivo and clinically.
Onion was extracted by methyl alcohol and some physiological activities and antioxidative effect of the extracts on soybean oil, corn oil, lard and shortening were compared with commercial ...antioxidants such as alpha-tocopherol and BHT. The electron donating ability was about 70% at concentration above of 30 mg/mL. Nitrite scavenging effects of all concentrations diminished at higher pH, while in the case of pH 1.2, it showed a nitrite scavenging effect of more than 80% at concentration above of 30 mg/mL. And also, the angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory effect was good above 80%. The soybean oil, corn oil, lard and shortening containing different levels of the onion extract were stored at 60 degrees to evaluate the antioxidative activity of onion extracts. Perxide value, acid value and TBA value of each oil were detected. Onion extract was very effective to retard oxidation of soybean oil, corn oil and lard, and especially, the very high antioxidtive effect was observed for lard.
Comparative evaluation of four procedures for determination of methanol, i.e. colorimetry with Schiff's reagent (1), colorimetry with chromotropic acid according to Yamamura and Matsouka (2), ...colorimetry with chromotropic acid according to Mathers (3), and gas chromatography (4), was carried out. Methods 3 and 4 were found to be most precise while the method 2 - least precise of all. Mean measures of disperison of results in the method 3 were similar to those in the method 4. With regard to large expense and minor accessibility of the method 4, the method 3 should be recommended as simple, not time-consuming and suitable procedure in serial analysis of MeOH
