Marching band (MB) artists experience stressors influencing their physical, mental, and emotional health warranting medical support, and they face challenges similar to those of other college ...students and athletes. Mental health illnesses exist in collegiate and MB settings, but barriers affect access to treatment.
To examine MB artists' perceived barriers to and attitudes toward seeking care from mental health professionals. The secondary aim was to explore barriers to and attitudes about seeking mental health counseling between genders and history of pursuing mental health counseling.
Cross-sectional study.
Online survey.
A total of 534 MB artists (women = 312, men = 222; age = 19.7 ± 1.4 years).
Participants completed surveys on demographics and past medical history along with the Barriers to Help Seeking Checklist, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help-Short Form Scale (ATSPPH-SF), and the Mental Help Seeking Attitudes Scale (MHSAS). Descriptive statistics were calculated to assess demographic data. Cross-tabulations and χ2 statistics were used to evaluate individual barriers (Barriers to Help Seeking Checklist) between genders. Scales were scored 1 to 7 and 10 to 30 on the MHSAS and ATSPPH-SF, respectively. A 1-way analysis of variance measured differences in the total mean score on the ATSPPH-SF between genders.
The highest barrier reported was lack of time to seek services (69.1%; n = 369), followed by 47.6% (n = 254) for services not available during my free time. Average scores were 4.0 ± 0.4 on the MHSAS (indicating neutral attitudes toward seeking help) and 17.97 ± 5.48 on the ATSPPH-SF (indicating slightly positive attitudes to seeking help). No differences were seen for the total mean scores on the MHSAS and ATSPPH-SF between genders.
Marching band artists' barriers to and attitudes toward mental health care influenced their ability to seek care in times of need and demonstrated some similarities to those of collegiate athletes. Awareness of the obstacles MB artists face in receiving mental health care will assist health care providers in advocating for improved care in this setting.
This systematic literature review aims to identify and critically examine the prevailing general trends of music education research that addresses issues of improvisation from 1985 to 2015. The study ...examined the main features of studies with impact that focus on musical improvisation and have been published in peer-reviewed music education journals. Data were organised on the basis of the following: 1) General publication features; 2) Topic; 3) Methodological approach; 4) Participant features; 5) Type of improvisation; 6) Definition of improvisation; 7) Findings; 8) Suggestions for practice. The study also takes a close look at the construction of the discourses through which improvisation has been framed in the field of music education, providing insights on how such discourses create particular pedagogical visions of improvisation. To this end, we have created a map of the different visions of improvisation pedagogy that the studied works point towards. These visions have been clustered in the following five categories: (i) from rupture of certainties to creative problematisation; (ii) return to the “natural” beginning—in search of humanness; (iii) improvisation as a learning tool; (iv) conserving and enlivening traditions; (v) improvisation as an impetus for creativity. The map proposed in this study is meant as a possible representation of the general trends that underpin music education research focusing on improvisation. This map can also be seen as a “tool” through which music educators can situate their practice and reflect on their particular ways of working with improvisation, possibly envisioning alternative ways forward.
While the proper teaching of technique is vital to the execution of a beautiful sound, many teachers forget an incredibly important fact: Most beginning students have very little idea what their ...instrument is supposed to sound like. It is in the teacher's interest to control the conversation by putting fine examples in front of the student. The author discusses providing these examples for students and provides a list of recommended saxophonists in both classical and jazz styles as an example.
Part-work is a skill through which an individual performs and maintains one musical part while another part is performed at the same time. Rich and varied part-work experiences feature prominently in ...the musical lives of children. Despite this, elementary general music teachers often frame part-work as a skill needed in the short term to perform specific concert repertoire or as a skill needed in preparation for future participation in choirs, bands, and orchestras. In this article, three vignettes involving part-work in general music are juxtaposed with vignettes involving part-work beyond school settings. These narratives are offered in an effort to reframe part-work pedagogy as a means of enabling personally meaningful engagements with and through music. Practical considerations of this reframing are explored using Georgia Newlin’s teaching sequences for part-singing development as a foundation.
Emotional self-regulation is acknowledged as one of the most important reasons for musical engagement at all ages. Yet there is little knowledge on how this self-regulatory use of music develops ...across the life span. A qualitative study was conducted to initially explore central processes and strategies of the emotional self-regulation during adulthood. The data were collected through group interviews and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Participants were 21 interviewees with an age range of 21—70 years. The results clarified conceptual features of music-related emotional self-regulation in adulthood and revealed two main trends. First, the basic nature of regulation, including various regulatory goals and strategies, remained highly similar throughout adulthood. Second, however, several changes were also evident, and they could be further categorized into three types: change by age, event-related fluctuations, and retirement transition. The study provided knowledge about the role of music-related emotional experiences as a functional and meaningful part of human behavior and psychosocial development during adulthood.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of mindfulness practices on high school band students. This action research project took place in spring 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic ...stay-at-home orders. Four students enrolled in the high school band participated in five weeks of mindfulness practice interventions over the virtual format alongside their instrumental music director. Mindfulness practices included diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation imagery, cued relaxation, and stretching. Throughout the five weeks, student participants discussed improved focus, improvement of stress management, and increased frequency of mindfulness practice. However, four months after data collection was complete, three of the four student participants continued to practice mindfulness techniques on their own time to assist with nervousness, anxiety, and stress.
Researchers have documented that participation in community band settings can lead to adults’ perceptions of musical and social benefits. Directors who can strategically consider ways to encourage ...musical and social benefits for their adult band participants may be encouraging these benefits to flourish. This research-to-resource article provides example applications to aid directors with implementing positive musical and social experiences in adult community music settings.
This study aimed to examine the association between musical activities and quality of life in older adults using a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: background ...variables, quality of life variables (measured from two aspects: appreciation of life and life-ability of the person), and musical activity variables (frequency of engagement in musical activities, perceived importance of musical activities, motivation for acquiring musical skills and knowledge, and self-efficacy regarding musical skills and knowledge). It was sent to 525 people aged 60 to 98 years who were enrolled in two Silver Human Resource Centers in Tokyo. We found a significant correlation between almost all the musical activity variables and the quality of life measures; the trend was consistent even after controlling for background variables. The results indicated that both the frequency of involvement in musical activities and the mindset toward musical skills and potency were associated with quality of life. The strength of this study is that the association between quality of life and various musical aspects—both frequency of participation and psychological aspects of musical activities—was explored within the same research design, which is the first to be carried out solely with older adults.
This essay analyzes Lizzo's 2019 Tiny Desk Concert as an affective performance of call-and-response that provides insight into pleasurable transgressions of hegemonic boundaries to performatively ...spread love. Lizzo invites a transgression of these norms, eliciting a response from her physical and digital audiences to embrace the fat, Black, feminine abject as a means of self-love. Turning to the Black communicative technique of calland- response, the essay illustrates the contours of the choric self-love Lizzo establishes with her audiences that transformatively reimagines a self-love that centers Black women's joy.
