Mutual communication within cancer couples is a complex process. More research is needed to explore the complex process of mutual communication and its nuances presented by various factors in ...different culture contexts. Gender, a factor embedded in marital relationships, is an important consideration. We thus aim to explore the mutual communication process within Chinese colorectal cancer couples and take gender into account.
A qualitative study was conducted by interviewing 20 colorectal cancer patients and 15 spousal caregivers. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the transcripts.
Three themes (mutual communication and support interaction, communication quality, and foundation of mutual communication and collaboration) were developed. Gender was found to have specific impact on emotional disclosure and communication challenges. A preliminary framework of “smile” was constructed to demonstrate the relationship among the three themes and the relationships between the three themes and dyads’ psychosocial adaptation to colorectal cancer.
Study findings demonstrate complex mutual communication processes within colorectal cancer couples and the impact of gender. The findings will contribute to developing more effective colorectal cancer couple-based mutual communication interventions. Health practitioners are suggested to improve mutual communication within colorectal cancer couples in three aspects: relational topics, emotional disclosure and communication skills. Guiding couples to deal with each theme and the relationship among the themes simultaneously is helpful for them to return and smile to their normal life.

An increasing amount of evidence suggests that bidirectional communication between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system (CNS), which is also known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis, plays ...a key role in the development and function of the brain. For example, alterations or perturbations of the gut microbiota (GM) are associated with neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders and modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis by probiotics, pre-biotics, and/or diet induces preventative and therapeutic effects. The current interpretation of the mechanisms underlying this relationship are mainly based on, but not limited to, parallel CNS, endocrine, and immune-related molecular pathways that interact with each other. Although many studies have revealed the peripheral aspects of this axis, there is a paucity of data on how structural and functional changes in the brain correspond with gut microbiotic states
. However, modern neuroimaging techniques and other imaging modalities have been increasingly applied to study the structure, function, and molecular aspects of brain activity in living healthy human and patient populations, which has resulted in an increased understanding of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The present review focuses on recent studies of healthy individuals and patients with diverse neurological disorders that employed a combination of advanced neuroimaging techniques and gut microbiome analyses. First, the technical information of these imaging modalities will be briefly described and then the included studies will provide primary evidence showing that the human GM profile is significantly associated with brain microstructure, intrinsic activities, and functional connectivity (FC) as well as cognitive function and mood.
The rising aging population has escalated the need for physically assistive robots to aid the elderly, potentially taking over some roles of caregivers. However, a general unease exists among people ...when they physically interact with autonomously operating robots, leading to their limited adoption. To address this issue, accountability has been studied to reduce anxiety by displaying robot information. However, the one-way information presentation leaves the user feeling anxious because the content and timing of the movements might be inconsistent with the user's intentions. Therefore, the importance of mutual communication in care robots was validated in this study using a user interface simple enough for the elderly to use during daily activities. A care robot was equipped with a screen and speaker for information presentation and user-operable buttons for intention input, enabling two-way communication. The robot presents its movement options to the user for confirmation when the robot detects user abnormality, followed by the user conveying the desired intention to the robot. The effectiveness of this mutual communication approach was rigorously tested under various conditions. The results of questionnaires indicated that the inclusion of button input for mutual communication enhanced user comfort and ease of use, underpinning the importance of bidirectional interaction in physically assistive robotics.
In recent years, the practice of science communication has disseminated scientific knowledge and fostered citizens’ trust and interest in science through dialogue on science-related emotions and ...values. In this study, we initiated science communication during a Japanese tea ceremony in a traditional café space, throughout which we engaged in dialogue with citizens who did not expect to experience science communication at the event. We analysed the dialogues of eight groups. There was some tendency for both citizens and scientists to initiate conversations in the café space, and this bilateral dialogue was promoted by the understanding of the characteristic of this science café. These results indicate that the design of spaces and the explanation about communication may effectively stimulate dialogue with citizens.
Non-human animals commonly perform mutual communication in which two individuals simultaneously exchange information in an interaction that can comprise multiple components and multimodal signals. ...The forms of mutual communication vary widely, ranging from simple greeting ceremonies to complex paired dances including ultiple behavioural elements. Our understanding of mutual communication lags markedly because few systematic studies have examined this topic. In this review, we used the example of paired dances in red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) to examine two important aspects of mutual communication: structure and function. We reviewed the difficulty analysing the key characteristics of structure quantitatively (e.g. sequential pattern and complexity), and examined suitable analytic methods such as etermining the four levels of its characteristics. We proposed that a combination of current methods and new methods, such as the Shannon entropy index and temporal associations among behavioural elements, is necessary to quantify the complexity of mutual communication. Regarding the function of paired dances, we critically discuss the pair bond hypothesis, which suggests that a paired dance strengthens pair bonds in monogamous, long-living birds. Testing this classical hypothesis remains a challenge due to the difficulty of performing quantitative analyses of paired dances and the ambiguous concept of pair bonds. We hope that the questions and predictions raised in this paper will encourage future research on mutual communication in non-human animals.
According to Murray Bowen's family systems theory, the family is an emotional unit where members influence each other. Family strength, in that members care for, respect, and communicate with each ...other sincerely and freely and overcome difficulties together through joint efforts, is what every family yearns for and pursues. Maternal gatekeeping behavior not only affects the relationship between each family member but also has an impact on family strength. Father-perceived family strength and maternal gatekeeping were investigated in this study, along with the mediation effect of father involvement and mutual communication. In total, 320 fathers of children aged 3-5 were randomly recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. The correlation results indicated that maternal gate-opening behavior, father involvement, mutual communication, and family strength are positively correlated with each other, whereas maternal gate closing is negatively associated with father involvement, mutual communication, and family strength. Path analysis verified the partial (dual) mediation effect of father involvement and mutual communication between maternal gate opening and family strength, as well as a complete (dual) mediation effect upon maternal gate closing. The current study provides new insights into understanding the underlying mechanisms of father-perceived family strength influenced by maternal gatekeeping behavior. Meanwhile, the mediation effect of father involvement and mutual communication also highlights the importance of parenting preparation for fathers, such as psychological self-adjustment, especially under interception or restriction.
We present large eddy simulations of a midlatitude open ocean front using a modified state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics code. We investigate the energy and information fluxes at the ...submesoscale/small-scale range in the absence of any atmospheric forcing. We find submesoscale conditions (Ro∼1, Ri∼1) near the surface within baroclinic structures, related to partially imbalanced frontogenetic activity. Near the surface, the simulations show a significant scale coupling on scales larger than ∼103 (m). This is manifested as a strong direct energy cascade and intense mutual communication between scales, where the latter is evaluated using an estimator based on Mutual Information Theory. At scales smaller than ∼103 (m), the results show near-zero energy flux; however, at this scale range, the estimator of mutual communication still shows values corresponding with a significant level of communication between them. This fact motivates investigation into the nature of the self-organized turbulent motion at this scale range with weak energetic coupling but where communication between scales is still significant and to inquire into the existence of synchronization or functional relationships between scales, with emphasis on the eventual underlying nonlocal processes.
Background: This study focused on attitudes of workers and family members towards self-determination of individuals with intellectual disability. First, we compare their self-determination attitudes. ...Second, we test the link from mutual communication (workers and family members perceive that the other party openly dialogues about self-determination) to individual attitudes. Finally, we examine the relationship between mutual communication and affinity in attitudes.
Method: We conducted a survey study with 111 organisations (914 workers and 845 family members).
Results: Workers have more positive attitudes than family members. In addition, high mutual communication was associated with individual positive attitudes towards self-determination and shared attitudes between workers and family members.
Conclusions: When both workers and family members perceive that the other party is accessible and willing to engage in open dialogue about self-determination issues, their attitudes converge.
Intelligence optimization algorithms have an important application in engineering calculation. Swarm intelligence optimization algorithms belong to the class of intelligent algorithms, which are ...derived from the simulation of natural biological evolution or foraging behaviours. But these algorithms have sometimes slow convergence, and for multi-peak problems, they are easy to fall into the local optimal solution in the later period of the algorithms. To solve these problems, in this paper, the advantages of these algorithms and the wolf colony search algorithm based on the strategy of the leader (LWCA) algorithm are used, to propose an improved wolf colony search algorithm with the strategy of the leader algorithm (ILWCA). ILWCA is based on mutual communication by the sensor perception of wireless networking, adding a global update strategy and a step acceleration network. In addition, by introducing the concept of individual density to depict the distribution density of the wolf, the problem of excessive input parameters of traditional wolf group algorithm is solved. Moreover, by adding the way of mutual migration, the algorithm increases the communication between wolves, and strengthens the overall performance of the optimization process. Finally, the experimental results show that the ILWCA algorithm achieves higher solution accuracy and better robustness compared with the accuracy and robustness of particle swarm optimization (PSO), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), swarm optimization algorithm (SOA), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), and genetic algorithms (GA).
