ABSTRACTSocietal trust in research and innovation is predicated on factors such as governance, safety, and responsible development. These are often thought of as regulatory matters, but regulation ...may be ill-adapted for many novel technologies. Anticipatory governance, potentially in the form of responsible innovation (RI), can help to provide this adaptivity and granularity. However, RI remains new to many fields, and can be difficult to apply. This paper analyses the literature to identify challenges for RI and lessons from other domain frameworks, synthesising this with empirical evidence to develop a Framework. The Beehive Framework is a straightforward to use, translatable scaffold, with accompanying guidance for mapping and recording RI within projects of various scales and types. Its iterative process model approach to RI contains elements of project management methodology, and captures information gathered during the processes of RI. It records these processes for further iteration, and comparison between projects.
Many information systems (IS) projects encounter significant problems. The literature suggests that decision-makers can be misled by overoptimistic estimates. We argue that such overoptimism may also ...be present in the choice of language in business cases. In this study, we analyzed the usage of such framing in 20 business cases for large IS projects of the Dutch government. Our findings show that newly proposed systems are systematically framed using positive adjectives, whereas the existing systems are framed using negative adjectives. This pattern of framing may subconsciously bias the decision-makers toward investing in new IS projects.
Contract management is a crucial component of any project. As construction projects are complex and difficult to manage, adequate attention must be given to the related contract management issues. ...Inexpert management can bring about serious unfavourable consequences that can even result in a project failure. This study aims to explore a specific case study: A private road construction project implemented in the Czech Republic. The analysis consists in identifying potential problems and discussion of their implications. The problem is investigated on three levels: economic, technical and legal. The paper also considers contrasting attitudes of the contracting parties (buyer and supplier), e.g., from the point of view of the causes of problems. Several recommendations are formulated on the basis of the research findings. The results of this study have an ambition to improve contract management capabilities in the construction sector in order to prevent the occurrence of similar problems in future and contribute to our understanding of long-term effects of contract management problems throughout the life cycle.
This paper examines the pervasive role of Microsoft’s presentation software PowerPoint as a genre of professional and organizational communication. Frequently, PowerPoint is not only used for the ...primary function it was initially designed for, i.e., facilitating live presentations, but also for alternative purposes such as project documentation. Its application in a neighboring domain, however, poses a functional dilemma: does the PowerPoint genre preserve the features of its primary function, i.e., presentation, or rather adapt to the new function, i.e., documentation? By drawing on a communication-centered perspective, this paper examines PowerPoint’s role in the domain of project documentation as a clash between the constitutive affordances of professional and of organizational communication. To investigate this issue empirically, I conducted a case study at a multinational business consulting firm. The study allows identification of three distinct PowerPoint subgenres, which differ in how they adapt to the function of project documentation. This paper contributes to organization studies by specifying the boundary conditions under which a genre of professional communication such as PowerPoint can be expected to maintain its genre-inherent characteristics even in the face of contradictory organizational requirements and to impose these characteristics on a neighboring domain of organizational communication practices.
Recently building information models have substantially improved the explicit semantic content of design information. Information models are used to integrate the initial phases of project ...development. On the construction site, however, the designs are still mostly represented as line-based paper drawings or projections on portable displays. A generic technology that can integrate information and situate it in time, place and context is augmented reality. The specific research issues addressed are (1) does augmented reality have a potential use in civil engineering, (2) how big – in comparison to other technologies - is this potential and (3) what are the main barriers to its adoption. The generic research issue was to develop a methodology for evaluation of potentials of technology. A prototype was built. It was tested on a real construction site to evaluate the potential of its use using the action-research method. A set of structured interviews with potential users was then conducted to compare the prototype to conventional presentation methods. Using this methodology it has been found out that augmented reality is expected to be as big a step as the transition from 2D line drawings to photorealistic 3D projections. The main barrier to the adoption is immature core virtual reality technology, conservative nature of construction businesses and size of building information models.
•Well-formed digital models, such as BIM, are a prerequisite for construction AR.•Augmented reality can contribute to the understanding of project documentation.•Construction AR needs to be developed in parallel with conventional methods.•Construction AR can help better understand construction 3D models.
PurposeThis paper proposes a new perspective on the enormous and unresolved challenge to existing practices of publication and documentation posed by the outputs of digital research projects in the ...humanities, where much good work is being lost due to resource or technical challenges.Design/methodology/approachThe paper documents and analyses both the existing literature on promoting sustainability for the outputs of digital humanities projects and the innovative approach of a single large-scale project.FindingsThe findings of the research presented show that sustainability planning for large-scale research projects needs to consider data and technology but also community, communications and process knowledge simultaneously. In addition, it should focus not only on a project as a collection of tangible and intangible assets, but also on the potential user base for these assets and what these users consider valuable about them.Research limitations/implicationsThe conclusions of the paper have been formulated in the context of one specific project. As such, it may amplify the specificities of this project in its results.Practical implicationsAn approach to project sustainability following the recommendations outlined in this paper would include a number of uncommon features, such as a longer development horizon, wider perspective on project results, and an audit of tacit and explicit knowledge.Social ImplicationsThese results can ultimately preserve public investment in projects.Originality/valueThis paper supplements more reductive models for project sustainability with a more holistic approach that others may learn from in mapping and sustaining user value for their projects for the medium to long terms.
In this article we consider the problem of legal regulation of construction of production facilities related to waste disposal I to V hazard class. The subject of the study is a set of legislative ...acts of the Russian Federation, the governing urban planning, environmental protection, as well as issues related to the production and consumption waste.
The history of the design and construction of the Ust-Srednekanskaya HPP in the Magadan Region is briefly reviewed. The reasons for and results of design works intended to update the project ...documentation for the main facilities of the hydraulic project are described.
Documentation management is a crucial component of successful business-related projects, but it often involves significant effort in terms of time and cost. Initializing, writing, and revising ...project documents can be a monotonous and fragmented task, especially during rapid project development. However, the context among most project documentation and business administration is highly interconnected. Based on the relationships among project documentation, especially for multimedia projects, this study uses the concept of section-orientation and presents a cooperative mechanism that uses object technology to clarify project documentation and its context. This study also introduces a prototype object-based functional project documentation system and illustrates the mechanism through two case studies and data analysis. The purpose of this study is to present a definite expression of this context in functional project documents. The results are practically applicable for managing multimedia project documentation.
