This article shows the design and construction of a test bench for experiments on mechanical systems vibrations. The experimental setup is finalized to the development of a project work proposed to ...the students of the course "Mechanical System Vibrations", within the BSc faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The principal motivation that leads to the enrichment of the educational programme of the aforementioned course is the willingness to involve the students in a valuable learning-by-doing activity, aligned to the recent paradigm of active learning. From a didactic perspective, such an approach improves the engagement of the students and promotes the discussion with their peers. In this framework, the curiosity towards the practical activity enhances the acquisition of knowledge. The project regards the theoretical modelling of a 4-storeys building exploiting a lumped-parameters approach, and the deployment of some laboratory sessions. Acceleration data gathered during laboratory activities are employed in analyses in both the time and the frequency domain, exploiting the procedure of “Experimental Modal Analysis”. Conclusively, the project requires the students to design and construct two different types of Tuned Mass Dampers whose effectiveness will be directly tested on the building, subjected to a condition of harmonic motion imposed by an actuated sled. The final deliverable of this practical activity is a report that students should submit by the end of the course.
This study describes how a primary school teacher and her students explored multiple means of communication through the use of a project on storytelling and drumming to personalize and translate ...cultural differences into universal human experiences they could understand. It documents how the teacher and two researchers collaborated with planning and implementing the drumming project so that it integrated social studies with multiple modes of literacy. It discusses how the teacher and researchers examined cultural universals within this project to provide students with a frame of reference to engage in an authentic understanding of diverse cultures within their classrooms. Finally, the study examined the students’ work within the actual drumming project.
Project‐based forms of work have been steadily increasing in all sorts of organizations, which has led scholars to investigate their effects on career development and career management practices. ...However, disciplinary and conceptual divides have prevented comprehensive conceptualizations of project workers' careers to emerge to this day. Building on an integrative literature review, the paper underlines the predominance of individual‐centred research designs giving pride of place to project managers, at the expense of organizational‐centred studies accounting for the multiple stakeholders involved in project workers' careers. Five research perspectives on project work and careers are highlighted: Project work may be studied under the prism of career management, career transitions, career orientations, career advantages, and role transitions. The review is concluded with a comprehensive framework articulating project work and careers. The paper ultimately pleads for further investigation of project work and careers from a multistakeholder and organizational perspective.
Corpus linguistics is one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing areas of modern linguistics. It affects all areas of linguistics, including methodology of teaching foreign languages, translation ...and other linguistic disciplines. Corpus linguistics has had a direct impact on teaching foreign languages. However, in general, it remains a marginal method in teaching. Analysis of publications on the subject allows us to conclude that very few studies are long-term and aimed at working with schoolchildren. This article proposes a model for the development of sustainable interest among high school students in online corpora as sources of linguistic information, including the initiation stage in the form of project work in mini-groups to study well-known sayings with the consequent stage aiming at completing tasks supplementing the main textbook on a regular basis. The organization of project work addressing the corps of 11
grade students of the Natural Science Lyceum at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is described. The paper outlines further research.
This paper describes teaching-learning process shortcomings in the English for Medical Purposes, a subject of fourth-year medical student’s curriculum at the medical university of Camagüey. Its main ...objective is aimed at the elaboration of a Methodological Alternative distinguished by the use of the Project Method approach to favour the development of writing skills in English. This Methodological Alternative is characterized by being flexible, pertinent and able to develop and integrate knowledge of the English language and medicine. It has two main stages: Socio-affective dynamics for the production of written texts in English for medical purposes and the dynamics for the construction of written texts in English for medical purposes. The results of considering expertise’s’ opinion revealed the feasibility of the proposal as a fostering tool for teaching writing in medical sciences.
The aim of the study is to analyse opportunities for career development of organizational personnel. The object of the study includes processes providing organizational career development. The ...subject of the research is interdependence between personal professional development of employees and organizational performance. The research methods are description and analysis.
The processes providing career progression can be divided into direct, actively encouraging employees to improve professional skills, and indirect, creating favourable work environment and commitment to achieving organizational relevant goals. Under the modern conditions of societal transformations, it is highly important to pay closer attention to interrelation between personal development and organizational aims since a customary vision of career as vertical climbing a corporate ladder is receding into the past. Opportunities for continuous training, entrepreneurial activity, and multiple vacancies are changing a vision of career as a finite process within an organization. An essential role in the system of personnel management should be played by employee career development planning which establishes connections between financial and nonfinancial incentives, on the one hand, and employee performance, on the other hand, – with respect to their personal interests, social characteristics and motivation level.
The author concludes that two opposite tendencies influence personnel management system functioning: change and conservation. The necessity for change is caused by transforming market and social conditions, employee personal growth, and organizational life cycle. The tendency for status quo conservation is dictated by the desire of any system for stability and sustainability.
Purpose
This paper aims to understand if a project work methodology proposed to students, based on an inquiry perspective and dealing with different dimensions of sustainable development, contributed ...to creating an interdisciplinary solution for a problem on sustainability challenged by food production and consumption, and also to understand if this methodological approach is perceived as important to their learning as professionals and citizens. Data were collected by direct observation, a questionnaire applied to the students and students’ individual reflections.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper aims to present the research results of the impact of a pedagogical approach on students, implemented as a part of the Doctoral Programme in Sustainability Science, which was designed following an innovative model at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. The main drivers include building a new body of interdisciplinary knowledge leading to the application of science to address real problems towards transdisciplinary education.
Findings
The results suggest great potential for an inquiry perspective in trying to solve a real problem. Students’ proposals were realistic, viable and complementary enough to collectively contribute in response to the global problem. The use of approaches acquired from different areas of knowledge was clear, and the project methodology was well understood. Students considered the experience very rewarding in terms of learning and contributing positively to their personal and professional development.
Originality/value
This Doctoral programme is anchored in a progressive continuum encompassing holistic debates with a multidisciplinary team of professors in environments that promote interdisciplinary attitudes and new knowledge, and also project work aimed at guiding students to transdisciplinary learning, which constitutes an innovative form of dealing with the complex challenges created by the science of sustainability.
