Quantum many-body systems are typically endowed with a tensor product structure. A structure they inherited from probability theory, where the probability of two independent events is the product of ...the probabilities. The tensor product structure of a Hamiltonian thus gives a natural decomposition of the system into independent smaller subsystems. It is interesting to understand whether a given Hamiltonian is compatible with some particular tensor product structure. In particular, we ask, is there a basis in which an arbitrary Hamiltonian has a 2-local form, i.e., it contains only pairwise interactions? Here we show, using analytical and numerical calculations, that a generic Hamiltonian (e.g., a large random matrix) can be approximately written as a linear combination of two-body interaction terms with high precision; that is, the Hamiltonian is 2-local in a carefully chosen basis. Moreover, we show that these Hamiltonians are not fine-tuned, meaning that the spectrum is robust against perturbations of the coupling constants. Finally, by analyzing the adjacency structure of the couplings Formula: see text, we suggest a possible mechanism for the emergence of geometric locality from quantum chaos.
An eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a metric (quantum) graph has an excess number of zeros due to the graph's non-trivial topology. This number, called the nodal surplus, is an integer between 0 and ...the graph's first Betti number β. We study the distribution of the nodal surplus values in the countably infinite set of the graph's eigenfunctions. We conjecture that this distribution converges to Gaussian for any sequence of graphs of growing β. We prove this conjecture for several special graph sequences and test it numerically for a variety of well-known graph families. Accurate computation of the distribution is made possible by a formula expressing the nodal surplus distribution as an integral over a high-dimensional torus.
Rectangular billiards have two mirror symmetries with respect to perpendicular axes and a twofold (fourfold) rotational symmetry for differing (equal) side lengths. The eigenstates of rectangular ...neutrino billiards (NBs), which consist of a spin-1/2 particle confined through boundary conditions to a planar domain, can be classified according to their transformation properties under rotation by π (π/2) but not under reflection at mirror-symmetry axes. We analyze the properties of these symmetry-projected eigenstates and of the corresponding symmetry-reduced NBs which are obtained by cutting them along their diagonal, yielding right-triangle NBs. Independently of the ratio of their side lengths, the spectral properties of the symmetry-projected eigenstates of the rectangular NBs follow semi-Poisson statistics, whereas those of the complete eigenvalue sequence exhibit Poissonian statistics. Thus, in distinction to their nonrelativistic counterpart, they behave like typical quantum systems with an integrable classical limit whose eigenstates are non-degenerate and have alternating symmetry properties with increasing state number. In addition, we found out that for right triangles which exhibit semi-Poisson statistics in the nonrelativistic limit, the spectral properties of the corresponding ultrarelativistic NB follow quarter-Poisson statistics. Furthermore, we analyzed wave-function properties and discovered for the right-triangle NBs the same scarred wave functions as for the nonrelativistic ones.
We consider a noninteracting many-fermion system populating levels of a unitary random matrix ensemble (equivalent to the q=2 complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model)-a generic model of single-particle ...quantum chaos. We study the corresponding many-particle level statistics by calculating the spectral form factor analytically using algebraic methods of random matrix theory, and match it with an exact numerical simulation. Despite the integrability of the theory, the many-body spectral rigidity is found to have a surprisingly rich landscape. In particular, we find a residual repulsion of distant many-body levels stemming from single-particle chaos, together with islands of level attraction. These results are encoded in an exponential ramp in the spectral form factor, which we show to be a universal feature of nonergodic many-fermion systems embedded in a chaotic medium.
Out-of-time-order (OTO) operators have recently become popular diagnostics of quantum chaos in many-body systems. The usual way they are introduced is via a quantization of classical Lyapunov growth, ...which measures the divergence of classical trajectories in phase space due to the butterfly effect. However, it is not obvious how exactly they capture the sensitivity of a quantum system to its initial conditions beyond the classical limit. In this paper, we analyze sensitivity to initial conditions in the quantum regime by recasting OTO operators for many-body systems using various formulations of quantum mechanics. Notably, we utilize the Wigner phase space formulation to derive an ħ-expansion of the OTO operator for spatial degrees of freedom, and a large spin 1∕s-expansion for spin degrees of freedom. We find in each case that the leading term is the Lyapunov growth for the classical limit of the system and argue that quantum corrections become dominant at around the scrambling time, which is also when we expect the OTO operator to saturate. We also express the OTO operator in terms of propagators and see from a different point of view how it is a quantum generalization of the divergence of classical trajectories.
