This study investigated whether surface hole counts could be used as a reliable estimate of density of the ghost shrimps Trypaea australiensis Dana 1852 and Biffarius arenosus Poore 1975 (Decapoda, ...Thalassinidea) in south eastern Australia. The relationship between the number of holes and the number of ghost shrimps was explored in two ways. Resin casts were used to document any changes in the number of burrow openings per shrimp burrow over time. Manual suction pumping (bait pumping) within a given mudflat area was used to directly compare the number of holes on the sediment surface with the number of ghost shrimps occupying the corresponding volume of sediment. Resin casting showed that throughout the year, the burrows of T. australiensis consistently had an average of two openings, whereas the burrows of B. arenosus showed much greater variability over time with two to four openings per burrow. Overall, a significant relationship between the number of holes and the number of ghost shrimps (mixed species populations) was found, with 2.1 burrow openings for each ghost shrimp. However, some temporal and spatial variation was seen in this relationship. We suggest that the hole count method may be reliable in estimating ghost shrimp densities with restricted use and site specific validation based on some limitations found in this study.
Background/Aim: The Andhra Pradesh Eye disease Study (APEDS) was a conventional cross-sectional study conducted in four locations during 1996-2000. Ten years later, a Rapid Assessment of Refractive ...Errors (RARE) survey was conducted in one of the geographical regions. The prevalence of visual impairment (VI), uncorrected refractive error (URE), spectacles use obtained from both the surveys was compared. Settings and Design: Rural settings; cross-sectional studies. Materials and Methods: In both the surveys, distance visual acuity (VA) was assessed using a logMAR chart. Pinhole VA was assessed if presenting VA was <20/20 in APEDS and <20/40 in RARE. VI was defined as presenting VA <20/40 in the better eye. URE was defined as presenting VA <20/40 and improving to ≥20/40 with a pinhole. Statistical Analysis Used: Performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Chi square tests and t-test were used. Results and Conclusions: The results from a RARE survey with 3,095 subjects were compared with an APEDS dataset that had 1,232 subjects in the same age group of 15-49 years. The prevalence of VI has decreased from 9.5% (95% CI, 7.7-11.1) in APEDS to 2.7% (95% CI, 2.1-3.3) in RARE. Similarly, the prevalence of URE in the better eye decreased from 5.8% (95% CI, 4.5-7.1) to 2.3% (95% CI, 1.8-2.8). The usage of spectacles increased from 6.6% (95% CI, 5.2-8.0) to 9.7% (95% CI, 8.7-10.7). There is a decreasing trend in the prevalence of VI and URE in Mahbubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh over a decade.

The effectiveness of eye care service delivery is often dependant on how the different stakeholders are aligned. These stakeholders range from the ministries of health who have the capacity to grant ...government subsidies for eye care, down to the primary healthcare workers who can be enrolled to screen for basic eye diseases. Advocacy is a tool that can help service providers draw the attention of key stakeholders to a particular area of concern. By enlisting the support, endorsement and participation of a wider circle of players, advocacy can help to improve the penetration and effectiveness of the services provided. There are several factors in the external environmental that influence the eye care services - such as the availability of trained manpower, supply of eye care consumables, government rules and regulations. There are several instances where successful advocacy has helped to create an enabling environment for eye care service delivery. Providing eye care services in developing countries requires the support - either for direct patient care or for support services such as producing trained manpower or for research and dissemination. Such support, in the form of financial or other resources, can be garnered through advocacy.
The number of invasive exotic plant species establishing in the United States is continuing to rise. When prevention of exotic species from entering into a country fails at the national level and the ...species establishes, reproduces, spreads, and becomes invasive, the most successful action at a local level is early detection followed by eradication. We have developed a simple geographic information system (GIS) analysis for developing watch lists for early detection of invasive exotic plants that relies upon currently available species distribution data coupled with environmental data to aid in describing coarse-scale potential distributions. This GIS analysis tool develops environmental envelopes for species based upon the known distribution of a species thought to be invasive and represents the first approximation of its potential habitat while the necessary data are collected to perform more in-depth analyses. To validate this method we looked at a time series of species distributions for 66 species in Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky Mountain counties. The time series analysis presented here did select counties that the invasive exotic weeds invaded in subsequent years, showing that this technique could be useful in developing watch lists for the spread of particular exotic species. We applied this same habitat-matching model based upon bioclimatic envelopes to 100 invasive exotics with various levels of known distributions within continental U.S. counties. For species with climatically limited distributions, county watch lists describe county-specific vulnerability to invasion. Species with matching habitats in a county would be added to that county's list. These watch lists can influence management decisions for early warning, control prioritization, and targeted research to determine specific locations within vulnerable counties. This tool provides useful information for rapid assessment of the potential distribution based upon climate envelopes of current distributions for new invasive exotic species.
The widespread decline of coral reefs requires integrated management measures across whole regions. Knowledge of demographic processes of reef organisms is important for informed management, yet ...current techniques for assessing such processes are time consuming, making it impractical to gather relevant information over large scales. We tested the usefulness of digital still photography as a rapid assessment technique to estimate coral recruitment—an important process in coral reef recovery. Estimates of the density and diversity of juvenile hard corals from digital images were compared with direct visual estimates from the same plots made in the field. Multiple plots were sampled on four reefs from a range of locations on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. On average, estimates of juvenile densities from photographic images were lower, in both absolute and relative terms, than that estimated from images. This was the case whether colonies <20 mm or <50 mm in diameter were considered. Overall differences between methods were generally greater at reefs where recruitment was higher, though proportional differences (density from images/density from direct visual census) still varied among reefs. Although the ranking of taxa, in terms of their densities, from the two methods were similar, the density of common genera was generally underestimated in images, and the occurrence of ‘unknown' taxa was higher. We conclude that photographic images do not constitute a reliable rapid assessment method for estimating the spatial patterns in the density or diversity of juvenile hard corals.
The objective was to assess need, evaluate projects, and devise a roadmap for future provision given budget cuts. The analysis of 30 substance misuse services in towns and rural areas of Ireland was ...conducted in 2010. Analysis revealed that 24,315 (95% CI 12,928-40,629) individuals were using illegal drugs in 2006, 893 individuals were using opiates, opiate and cocaine use was increasing as was drug use amongst females. Evaluations demonstrated that not all services were meeting emerging needs, services lacked administrative support, and funding needed to be redirected. The RAR approach was useful for policy decisions and budget cuts in times of economic restraint.
Non-native black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus Ord, 1815) that had emigrated from a private colony were reported by property owners in rural North Central Florida in 2006. The Florida ...Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services (WS) initiated an assessment of the population to determine its current distribution and the feasibility of eradication. Multiple surveys, interviews with residents and observations of abandoned burrows confirmed movement of animals as far as 3 km from the source colony. WS personnel conducted an eradication program of the source colony from 23 March through 4 May 2009, primarily using a 0.17-caliber rifle along with cable restraint devices for particularly wary animals. A total of 85 prairie dogs were killed at the site of the source colony and one animal was killed on a separate property. Subsequent surveys from 2009 through 2012 confirmed the eradication was successful. Communication with the owner of the source colony and nearby residents throughout the project was critical to success.
Wait times and length of stay (LOS) measure efficiency of care in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs). Our hospital introduced a rapid assessment program (RAP) wherein patients will be seen by a ...physician within 29 minutes of arrival to the PED. Our primary objective was to evaluate the impact of this RAP on total LOS and compare it with the pre-RAP period. The secondary objective was to compare door-to-physician times and admission frequencies.
We conducted an observational study of randomly selected visits before (in 2004) and after (in 2005) RAP in a PED. Data were acquired retrospectively from charts. We compared total LOS (time from arrival at triage to discharge), boarding time (time from the decision to admit to transfer to inpatient bed), door-to-physician time (arrival at triage to first evaluation by physician), and admission frequencies.
Data from 990 visits (in 2004) and 1010 visits (in 2005) indicated similar age, sex, seasonal distribution, and weekday distribution. The total median LOS decreased by 37 minutes with RAP (103 interquartile range {IQR}, 57-187 minutes in 2005 vs 140 IQR, 78-234 minutes in 2004, P < 0.001) but only among lower triage categories. Median door-to-physician time decreased by 20 minutes with RAP (15 IQR, 7-29 minutes in 2005 vs 35 IQR, 18-72 minutes in 2004, P < 0.001) among lower triage categories. The LOS was reduced both in admitted and discharged patients with no difference in the boarding times or admission frequencies.
In our PED, a RAP reduced the total LOS of patients with lower acuity of illness.
The purpose of this paper is to test the performance of rapid biodiversity assessment techniques in the lagoonal environment at the pan-Mediterranean scale. The multivariate techniques can produce ...patterns of lagoonal biodiversity along the Mediterranean. Additionally, it is shown that the polychaete inventory can preferably be used rather than the aggregation of information at the family level for the purposes of rapid biodiversity assessment. These techniques, however, appear to be weak for the environmental assessment because they cannot detect differences between the naturally disturbed and the anthropogenically impacted lagoons. Both taxonomic distinctness indices are found to be robust in providing meaningful results for rapid biodiversity/environmental assessment when the crustacean inventory and the polychaete and molluscan ones are used for the estimation of the average taxonomic distinctness and of the variation in taxonomic distinctness values, correspondingly. Conversely, information on the distribution of the macrofaunal species to the Mediterranean lagoons appears to be inadequate for the needs of such rapid biodiversity assessment at a regional scale. It is suggested that information on ecological convergence of the macrofaunal species would probably provide biodiversity indices with additional power, at least in the lagoonal environment.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Three categories of wetland assessment methods have been recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, including Level 1—Landscape-scale Assessment; Level 2—Rapid Field Methods; ...and Level 3—Intensive Biological and Physico–Chemical Measures. This study incorporates wetland assessment methods for each assessment level, including the Level 1 Landscape Development Intensity (LDI) index, Level 2 Wetland Rapid Assessment Procedure (WRAP), and Level 3 Florida Wetland Condition Index (FWCI). Using a neighborhood analysis in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), an LDI index map was created using 1995 land use, creating a calculated LDI index value for each 30 m² area in Florida. Level 1–3 assessment procedures were employed at 193 palustrine emergent (n = 75) and forested (n = 118) wetlands. Significant correlations were found among the multiple Level 1–3 assessment procedures using the nonparametric Spearman’s correlation coefficient for pair-wise comparisons of LDI and WRAP, LDI and diatom FWCI, WRAP and diatom FWCI, LDI and macrophyte FWCI, WRAP and macrophyte FWCI, LDI and macroinvertebrate FWCI, and WRAP and macroinvertebrate FWCI (|r| > 0.50, P < 0.01). Defining the relationship between Level 1–3 assessment methods may be used to estimate the more intensive and species assemblage-specific Level 3 FWCI assessment scores for wetlands with Level 1 or Level 2 scores. Inferences can then be made as to wetland condition based on established correlations with intensive assessment methods.
