The Royal Mineralogical Museum of the University of Naples Federico II can be a MAB in essence, a place where archive, library and museum coexist; for decades it was led by an illustrious ...mineralogist, Professor Arcangelo Scacchi, geologist and volcanologist, who also assumed the position of Rector of the University for several terms.Through the documents drawn up by the director and the correspondence held with exponents of the academic and institutional world and carefully preserved, it is possible to reconstruct not only the more than two hundred year history of the museum, but also its rich bibliographic heritage. Above all, of this, of the interweaving of purchases of minerals and books, of the studies for conservation and the idea offorming a "specialized" library for the use of mineralogists and of the conspicuous documentation purchased by the mineralogist for the university library, the current University Library of Naples, deals with the sources used.The transcription of the unpublished archival documents preserved both in the archives of the Royal Mineralogical Museum of the University of Naples Federico II and in the State Archives of Naples constitutes the heart of the work; especially the numerous book catalogues can shed light on the relationships of the nineteenth-century academic world.Over the years, especially in recent decades, several studies have had the mineralogy museum as their object, but perhaps for the first time the emphasis is on the library.

This paper treats plagiarism as performance and Angelo Berardi as a virtuoso. Berardi (1636–94), an active composer and musician, is remembered for his half dozen musical writings. Beginning with a ...discussion of previously lost or unknown writings by Berardi and his mentor Marco Scacchi, I demonstrate that Berardi composed his prose works through a highly self-conscious process of borrowing. More broadly, Berardi’s case opens a window onto the construction of musical texts and simultaneously complicates them as straightforward sources of musical information. Musicians used—and appropriated—the written word to craft and project personae in response to epistemological and social disadvantages: theory outranked practice and theorists outranked practitioners. In style, technique, and content Berardi is representative of musician-authors who presented themselves as gentlemen rather than musicians, adopted the style and tone of Italian academies and erudites, and favored more speculative matters (musical science, anti-quarianism, friendship, combinatorics), sometimes at the expense of practical ones. They pursued metaphysical and quadrivial questions now disregarded as irrelevant. I argue that, on the contrary, such writings reveal most precisely, at their most “irrelevant” and derivative, a musical and even mental world not quite congruent with current interest in its musical artifacts.

We used a new experimental approach involving thin aquaria, luminophores, time lapse photography and image analysis to assess sediment reworking in 2 closely related bivalves, Abra ovata and A. ...nitida. The method proved efficient based on the highly significant correlation between the concentrations of luminophores assessed using image analysis and direct counting of sediment slices. A. ovata and A. nitida exhibited different sediment reworking behaviours. A. ovata remained immobile within the sediment and transferred luminophores within the sediment through its siphonal activity, which resulted in the creation of typical inverse conical structures. A. nitida moved within the sediment and reworked a thinner sediment layer. Both A. ovata and A. nitida were characterised as biodiffusers. Biodiffusion coefficients (D-b) were maximal at intermediate food concentration in A. ovata and at high food concentration in A. nitida. This new approach allowed assessment of the effects of spatial scale and vertical grid size on the computation of D-b, In both species D-b decreased with spatial scale up to 3.750 cm and then remained constant. It is suggested that this pattern partly resulted from heterogeneity linked to: (1) the mode of sediment reworking (A. ovata) and (2) the relative proportion of reworked sediment surface (A. nitida). Vertical grid size > 0.250 cm resulted in a significant overestimation of D-b in A. nitida, due to the low thickness of the sediment layer reworked by this species. The implications of these results on the main characteristics (duration, spatial scale, vertical grid size) of classical luminophore experiments are discussed.
The scope of the study is an analysis of Schachnovelle (The Royal Game) by Stefan Zweig, focusing on the opposition between two topics: (1) cultural x\borders and conflicts and (2) intellectual ...cosmopolitism. The analysis is based on a semiotic approach, compared with the knowledge provided by literary criticism. As a result of this, the paper tries to cast a new light on Zweig’s place in literature. In particular, his progressive view on peace avoids the risks related to every kind of “professional reformism” and thus is still interesting nowadays.
The effects of medetomidine, a novel antifouling candidate, on the burrowing bivalve

The scientist Arcangelo Scacchi (1810-1893), is today rarely mentioned in histories of Italian science in the
nineteenth century. Even a brief consideration of his career, however, reveals that his ...work was of great importance to the scientific community of his age. For more than fifty years he was Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Naples and Curator of the Royal Mineralogical Museum, which under his guidance enjoyed a period of unprecedented success. The as yet unpublished Scacchi papers shed interesting light on the world of this Italian naturalist. His correspondence reveals much about Scacchi’s role in the scientific community both in Italy and abroad, and illustrate the extent to which he was involved in contemporary debates and research in the fields of geology, mineralogy, volcanology and crystallography.
