Within this qualitative study, we explored the idea that high school counselors, acting as a form of social capital, could influence the postsecondary opportunities of low socioeconomic students. We ...used a case study design to analyze freshman academy counselors and their influence in the career pathway selection process within one district to answer two research questions: (1) Using the knowledge available regarding college and career opportunities, how do freshman academy counselors influence low socioeconomic students’ career pathway selections? (2) How do freshman academy counselors’ perceptions of college and career opportunities for low socioeconomic students influence low socioeconomic students’ career pathway selections? We collected data through interviews, archival records, and document analysis, and analyzed the data using initial coding, leading to themes to explain the case. We found that high school counselors’ social capital was influenced by (a) the person behind the position, (b) the importance of context at specific schools, and (c) the access to resources at their school and how those resources meet student needs. We close with a discussion of the findings and the implications for practice and future research.
Historically, students attending school in rural and regional New South Wales have experienced poorer outcomes than their peers attending metropolitan schools. The lack of coordinated support ...services for students with complex support needs compounds this issue. Wraparound models of support have been successful in improving outcomes for students with complex support needs, and the New South Wales government has prioritised the establishment of strong relationships between schools and communities to overcome the limitations of geographic isolation. The aim of the current study was to explore wraparound support for students with complex support needs attending schools in rural and regional New South Wales. A qualitative research approach was employed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders to gain an in-depth understanding of current successes, barriers, and needs. The findings indicated that wraparound was most effective in rural and remote schools when school staff implemented bespoke approaches to wraparound, such as restorative practices. Resourcing was a barrier found to be central to all schools. Recommendations are provided to enhance the capacity of rural and regional NSW schools to provide wraparound support for students with complex support needs.

Developing the MGEC involved (a) conducting a literature review, (b) modifying items, and (c) gathering data from school counselors to analyze demographic data and conduct principal component analysis.

The participants are 214 School Counselor who are members of the Indonesian Guidance and Counseling Association (ABKIN) and the Guidance and Counseling Teacher Council (MGBK). This study measures the participation of School Counselor who fill out online questionnaires with respect to their perceptions of maximizing the use of ICT in providing counseling services. Measurement of the successful use of ICT in Guidance and counseling (BK) services during a pandemic will be measured through the attributes of Computer Anxiety (CA), Computer Self-Efficacy (CSA), Collegial Collaboration (CC), Lack Facility (LF), Perceive Usefulness (PU), and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU). The results showed findings in which all attributes have a significant outcome on the use of ICT on School Counselor.
Cyberbullying has become a well-documented problem plaguing the mental health and safety of teenagers in schools. An examination of the literature that includes other complex social/emotional issues ...provides a framework for more effective cyberbullying prevention and intervention strategies. This article examines current research, highlights existing misconceptions, and re-frames misguided intervention efforts that have prevented school counselors from effectively addressing cyberbullying. Considering these past mistakes and current misconceptions, this article provides a new philosophy with fresh approaches to cyberbullying for school counselors to accurately and appropriately intervene in schools.
As more students in the US explore college options outside of the country, school counselors need more training to support this exploration and process. International College Options began in 2013 to ...address this need by providing professional development opportunities for school counselors. This quantitative study examined the program's influence on school counselors' work in the college process; results show that participating school counselors found the program helpful to their work with students. Implications for practice and future research are included.
When and how often school counselors teach lessons varies; sometimes they go into classrooms in collaboration with teacher requests, and other times they have a set schedule rotation in conjunction ...with nonacademic classes like art, music, or physical education—often referred to as a related arts rotation. In this phenomenological study, we interviewed 10 elementary school counselors regarding their experiences teaching classroom lessons as part of the related arts rotation. Three themes emerged: (a) systemic factors, (b) frustrations, and (c) visibility. We discuss implications for school counselor advocacy.
A literature review of evidence-based social skills curricula that support adolescents with autism and developmental disabilities (ASD/DD) is presented. This article provides an overview of ...peer-reviewed articles and evaluation of the feasibility of implementing evidence-based interventions for social skills within the academic setting for adolescents in need of such interventions. The intent of this article is inform school counselors of these resources and curricula.
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory single-case study was to examine how school counselors from a master's level counselor education program are trained to work with PreK-12 students with ...disabilities. Transcripts from semi-structured interviews with nine school counselors-in-training and course syllabi were analyzed using embedded analysis and pattern matching analysis techniques. A key finding was that school counselor trainees drew on prior knowledge and experiences rather than education to work with PreK-12 students with disabilities. Recommendations for school counselor training focused on better serving PreK-12 students with disabilities are provided.
We examined work-related rumination among 288 school counselors and its relationship to elements of their professional well-being. The composite of affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, ...and detachment individually predicted burnout, turnover intentions, job satisfaction, and work engagement. Our findings indicated that higher affective rumination coupled with lower problem-solving pondering predicted increased burnout and turnover intentions and decreased job satisfaction and work engagement. We describe the implications of these findings for school counselors and educators.
