A huge amount of advice and guidance has been provided on how to craft articles for top-tier journals. Simultaneously, research publications themselves have been criticized as formulaic or even ...nonsensical by some scholars. Despite this heated debate, the structural aspects of scientific texts have received little attention. The typical structure that articles are expected to follow and the typical story they are supposed to recount are presented as mere conventions that bear no consequences. In this essay, I discuss these taken-for-granted assumptions and analyze the significant costs and burdens generated by these conventions. I then propose to simplify writing conventions by focusing on the basic ingredients of research rather than the imposition of a rigid structure and a standard story. I argue that more freedom should be given to authors in the way they organize their papers. Such a reform would be easy to implement and would have mostly positive implications for all stakeholders.
The introduction of BERTopic marked a crucial advancement in topic modeling and presented a topic model that outperformed both traditional and modern topic models in terms of topic modeling metrics ...on a variety of corpora. However, unique issues arise when topic modeling is performed on scientific articles. This paper introduces BERTeley, an innovative tool built upon BERTopic, designed to alleviate these shortcomings and improve the usability of BERTopic when conducting topic modeling on a corpus consisting of scientific articles. This is accomplished through BERTeley’s three main features: scientific article preprocessing, topic modeling using pre-trained scientific language models, and topic model metric calculation. Furthermore, an experiment was conducted comparing topic models using four different language models in three corpora consisting of scientific articles.
•Provide transformer-based tools to accelerate topic modeling using scientific articles as input.•Extract text embeddings using bidirectional encoder transformers and Large Language models to discover underlying themes and patterns within documents.•Create visual summaries of science topics from different publication databases.
This service is in the form of a seminar that aims to provide understanding to students in writing accredited national scientific articles. This service activity was carried out at IAIN Kediri. This ...seminar activity consists of 4 activities, namely: presentation of material by the servant, review of scientific articles of one of the students by the servant, question and answer, and evaluation of community service. The results of the evaluation of this service activity show that the percentage of the questionnaire filling score is 86.6% which is in the high category which means that this workshop is very successful in providing understanding to participants in writing scientific articles. This success was due to good cooperation between the committee, presenters, and participants in participating in this workshop. Pengabdi recommends that so that students can write scientific articles, students must understand three knowledge, namely about: writing stages, writing scientific article components and submitting scientific articles to journals.
With the development of the Internet, the number of scientific articles published online has also increased significantly. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the number of articles ...available online. Despite providing keywords and preparing abstracts, it is often a problem for articles to be properly matched during editorial process - to match the article to the competence of a particular editor. It is also a hassle for researchers who want to be kept informed about the most relevant articles. In paper, we propose the use of natural language processing (NLP) in the process of clustering scientific articles. Our study looks at the impact of clustering on the actual keywords provided by the authors – we analyse both the application of NLP to the abstract itself and to the introduction, followed by clustering using the K–means algorithm. As a result of experiments conducted on more than 1500 scientific articles, we have shown that our proposed approach allows articles to be approximated by their subject matter as a result of the clustering performed. The obtained results show that the best distribution of scientific articles can be obtained using the TF-IDF measure, and the worst - using TF measure.
After implementation of the Surgical Home Recovery (SHR) initiative for mastectomy within a large, integrated health delivery system, most patients are discharged on the day of the procedure. We ...sought to identify predictors of SHR and unplanned return to care (RTC).
Mastectomy cases with and without reconstruction from October 2017 to August 2019 were analyzed. Patient characteristics, operative variables, and multimodal pain management were compared between admitted patients and SHR patients using logistic regression. We identified predictors of RTC in SHR patients, defined as 7-day readmission, reoperation, or emergency department visit.
Of 2,648 mastectomies, 1,689 (64%) were outpatient procedures and the mean age of patients was 58.5 years. Predictors of SHR included perioperative IV acetaminophen (odds ratio OR 1.59; 95% CI, 1.28 to 1.97), perioperative opiates (OR 1.47; 95% CI, 1.06 to 2.02), and operation performed by a high-volume breast surgeon (OR 2.12; 95% CI, 1.42 to 3.18). Bilateral mastectomies (OR 0.70; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.91), immediate reconstruction (OR 0.52; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.70), and American Society of Anesthesiologists class 3 to 4 (OR 0.69; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.87) decreased the odds of SHR. Of SHR patients, 111 of 1,689 patients (7%) experienced RTC. Patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists class 3 to 4 (OR 2.01; 95% CI, 1.29 to 3.14) and African American race (OR 2.30; 95% CI, 1.38 to 4.91) were more likely to RTC; receiving IV acetaminophen (OR 0.56; 95% CI, 0.35 to 0.88) and filling an opiate prescription (OR 0.51; 95% CI, 0.34 to 0.77) decreased the odds of RTC.
Surgeon volume and multimodal pain medication increased the odds of SHR. Within the SHR group, American Society of Anesthesiologists Class 3 to 4 and African American patients increased the likelihood of RTC. This study helps optimize patient selection and perioperative practice for successful SHR.
