The present article is part of a larger project which investigates the occupational status of professional translators. The studies conducted so far within the framework of the project have been ...based on questionnaires and mainly been of a quantitative nature. The present article reports on a qualitative analysis of the wealth of comments which the translators who participated in the questionnaire studies wrote in response to an open invitation to comment on anything in relation to the study and its subject. In order to structure the translators’ comments, we have relied on Algirdas-Julien Greimas’ actantial model. Themes identified as important facilitators of or barriers to status included translator training, recognition of translators’ expertise, authorization, level of professionalization and income.
This article focuses on the occupational status of translators in international organizations. It reports on an empirical study on the job status of Danish staff translators working in the European ...Union as compared to that of Danish staff translators working in the national market. The study is based on data from questionnaires completed by 63 EU translators and 113 national-market translators, i.e., a total of 176 respondents. The translators’ perceptions of their occupational status were studied and compared through their responses to questions revolving around four parameters of occupational prestige: (1) remuneration, (2) education and expertise, (3) power and influence, and (4) visibility. Based on the literature, we hypothesized that the EU translators would enjoy a higher status than the national-market translators — a hypothesis which the study failed to confirm. In the article, the analyses and findings of the study are discussed, along with the possible reasons for the lack of alignment between the hypothesis and the results.
The information and technology era we live in has brought along an ever-increasing need for translation. In parallel with growing international co-operations of both political and commercial nature, ...the need for translation increased as well, therefore quality expectations are raised. Such expectations had a considerable effect on the number of Translation Studies and Translation and Interpreting departments. There are various languages offered in translator training in Turkey. German, English and French are prominent languages in that regard. Growing number of translator training departments has also accelerated the scientific research in Turkey. The content and aspects of scientific research in translation studies is determined by the scientific language of scholar along with other factors. In that context, translator training departments take certain language pairs into consideration for theory and application. This study aims to find out the role of scientific language on courses and their content, and whether there is a difference in curricula and courses in that regard and the reasons of possible differences and what their effects might be. For that purpose, curricula and course content of translator training departments will be compared according to certain criteria.
The article deals with the concept of borders and barriers in considering scenarios where the linguistic barrier is eventually lifted by technology one day. It begins with reflections on the biblical ...narrative of the Tower of Babel as an ancient representation of the concept of linguistic barriers between language communities. It gives numerous examples of the uptake of this narrative, from Translation Studies, to project calls and the marketing statements of machine translation technology. In the following section, examples of existing technology are presented, which could be considered as a first generation of automatic translation/interpretation systems. In the main section, several trends are predicted for both the translators’ profession and general economic/business/political/societal developments. The consequences are anticipated of a situation where ordinary cross-language communication will eventually have been almost fully taken over by automated systems. The article points to both the technology’s positive potential and, by showing the eventual risks involved, it equally rejects an attitude of the technology’s uncritical uptake. The article closes by pointing to the ethical dimension of machine translation systems linked with their types of uses and the choices reserved for their users.
The article proposes a survey of the Romanian context with regard to the translation profession, especially with reference to directions of development after 2007, i.e., the year of Romania’s ...accession to the EU. The research focuses on the configuration of the Romanian translation market and community in order to understand how the combination of international integration, academic efforts and involvement of professionals have made it possible to generate in a relatively short time a genuine marketplace and one that is rapidly making its mark on the European and international levels. The key questions are related to the level of awareness of the general population and academic institutions regarding translation market issues, the degree of recognition of language professions on a social and economic level and the extent to which professionalization has taken place to include a collective professional conscience. To these aims the following aspects will be reviewed: the underlying principles that build up the current context for translation in Romania, the developments in training, market practices and the relation to the European profession and academic environment.
Ovaj rad donosi osvrt na priručnik Izbor iz stare književnosti kršćanske priređivačā Kolomana Raca i Franje Lasmana te ukazuje na mogućnosti različitih metodičkih pristupa reprezentativnim ulomcima ...tekstova koje priručnik sadrži. Prigoda je bila dvostruka: stotinu godina od izdanja knjige (1917) i osamdeset godina od smrti Kolomana Raca (1937). U prvom se dijelu ovoga rada razmatra važnost i prepoznatljivost Kolomana Raca kao jednoga od najplodnijih prevoditelja s klasičnih jezika na hrvatski te se u tom kontekstu daju napomene o prevođenju i prevodilačkoj struci općenito. Drugi dio posvećen je opisu spomenutoga priručnika, analizi njegova sadržaja te razmatranju različitih metodičkih pristupa što ih nudi. U trećem se dijelu predlaže model prevodilačke radionice, zasnovane na usporedbi dviju latinskih inačica ulomka Hermina Pastira te dvaju danas dostupnih prijevoda istoga teksta. Četvrti dio donosi zaključke i završno razmatranje.
