This innovative work challenges normative binaries in contemporary translation studies and applies frameworks from queer historiography to the discipline in order to explore shifting perceptions of ...same-sex love and desire in translations and retranslations of William Shakespeare’s Sonnets. The book brings together perspectives from poststructuralism, queer theory, and translation history to set the stage for an in-depth exploration of a series of retranslations of theSonnets from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The complex and poetic language of the Sonnets, frequently built around era-specific idioms and allusions, has produced a number of different interpretations of the work over the centuries, but questions remain as to how the translation process may omit, retain, or enhance elements of same-sex love in retranslated works across time and geographical borders. In focusing on target cultures which experienced dramatic sociopolitical changes over the course of the twentieth century and comparing retranslations originating from these contexts, Spišiaková finds the ideal backdrop in which to draw parallels between changing developments in power and social structures and shifting translation strategies related to the representation of gender identities and sexual orientations beyond what is perceived to be normative. In so doing, the book advocates for a queer perspective on the study of translation history and encourages questioning traditional boundaries prevalent in the discipline, making this key reading for students and researchers in translation studies, queer theory, and gender studies, as well as those interested in historical developments in Central and Eastern Europe.
The article presents the Slovenian poet Srečko Kosovel (1904 – 1926) in the context of his entire poetic oeuvre, from impressionism and expressionism to constructivism, in a complex understanding of ...time, space, and inter-literary contacts, with an emphasis on his individual poetic expression. In the analytical part of the article, we focus on the reception of translated Kosovel’s poetry in the Czech and Slovak cultural space during the 20th and 21st centuries. Through an annotated bibliographical survey of published works, we identify three phases of the reception of his poetry in Slovenia, which are also reflected in three stages of translations into Czech and Slovak language: the first one is connected to two anthologies of Slovenian poetry published during the Second World War (1940), the second one is linked to two selections of his poetry that came out in response to the new reception and perception of Kosovel in the 1970s, and the third stage concerns translations published after 2000. We analyse the reception of the poet in translation by both looking into particulars of the selection of poems and composition of individual poetry collections and close reading of selected translations and observing translation strategies of individual translators. In doing so, we draw on analyses of poems that exist in several translated versions or in translations by different translators.
Studie představuje slovinského básníka Srečka Kosovela (1904 – 1926) v kontextu celé jeho básnické tvorby od impresionismu a expresionismu až po konstruktivismus, v komplexním chápání doby, prostoru, ...meziliterárních kontaktů a s důrazem na jeho individuální básnický výraz. V analytické části jsme se zaměřili na překladovou recepci Kosovelovy poezie v českém a slovenském prostoru v průběhu 20. a 21. století. Prostřednictvím komentovaného bibliografického přehledu vydaných děl definujeme tři fáze recepce jeho básnické tvorby ve Slovinsku, které se rovněž reflektují ve třech etapách překladů do českého a slovenského jazyka, a to nejprve v kontextu dvou básnických antologií slovinské poezie vydaných za druhé světové války (1940), poté ve dvou samostatných výborech jako reakcích na novou recepci a vnímání Kosovela v sedmdesátých letech 20. století, a nakonec v překladech po roce 2000. Překladatelskou recepci sledujeme jak z hlediska výběru básní a kompozice jednotlivých sbírek, tak analýzy vybraných překladů a překladatelských přístupů jednotlivých překladatelů. Při tom vycházíme z rozborů básní, které existují v několika překladových verzích nebo v překladech různých překladatelů.
The paper focuses on the concept of world literature for children and young adults, defining its constant, unchanging part and its variable part, which is still in the process of verification. Tales ...of Long Ago by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić is identified as a constituent of world literature for children and young adults. The translation of the collection entered Slovak children’s literature thanks to its valuable, as well as pragmatic aspects. The paper evaluates Tales of Long Ago from a genealogical aspect, as a fusion of three genres of children’s literature. Two different Slovak editions are addressed: one from 1976, Rozprávky z pradávna Tales of Long Ago and the other from 1991, Ctiborova hora a iné rozprávky Ctibor’s Forest and Other Tales, both translations signed by Zlatko Klátik. We are particularly interested in the concept of new reading, which significantly differs for each edition. New reading is defined as a progressive process of the revival of older literary works and reception of foreign literary texts by contemporary children, which brings a new type of pleasure to old tales.
Rad se bavi konceptom svjetske književnosti za djecu i mladež koja se dijeli na stalni, nepromjenjivi dio i na promjenjivi dio koji je još u fazi prepoznavanja i priznavanja. Priče iz davnine Ivane ...Brlić-Mažuranić ubrajaju se u njezin stalni dio. Prijevod te zbirke ulazi u slovačku dječju književnost zahvaljujući svojemu vrijednosnomu, ali i pragmatičnomu aspektu. U radu se Priče iz davnine razmatraju sa žanrovskoga stajališta, kao spoj triju žanrova dječje književnosti. Analiziraju se dva različita slovačka izdanja: Rozprávky z pradávna (Priče iz davnine) iz 1976. i Ctiborova hora a iné rozprávky (Ctiborova šuma i druge priče) iz 1991. godine, koje kao prevoditelj potpisuje Zlatko Klátik, pri čemu je tekst drugoga izdanja jezično izmijenjen. Posebna se pozornost posvećuje konceptu novoga čitanja, koji se oslanja na razlike u tekstovima. Novo čitanje definira se kao progresivni proces revitalizacije starijih izdanja i suvremene dječje recepcije stranih književnih tekstova, a omogućuje novu vrstu uživanja u starim pričama.
