Paper contributes to the discussion on the role of social entrepreneurship in economic development under the circumstances of growing uncertainty in the global economy. Its main purpose is to ... investigate the question whether social entrepreneurship is really one of the possible responses to the growing uncertainty in the global economy. On the basis of data from 49 countries that participated in 2009 in Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research we explored the prevalence and characteristics of social entrepreneurs, and the association between social entrepreneurship and believes about the role social entrepreneurship has been playing in solving social, environmental and community problems in particular countries. The importance of the role of social entrepreneurship in society was only partly confirmed. We found that the prevalence of social entrepreneurship in analyzed countries increases with economic development. We also found some evidence that social, environmental and community problems are generally solved more effectively by entrepreneurs than by civil social organizations. Nevertheless, the overall results of our analysis allow us to conclude that social entrepreneurship is not the response to the growing uncertainty in the global economy yet but it has certain potential to become one if economic policy actors rethink the way of managing resources at macroeconomic level.
