  • What is the role of information and communication technology for developing economies? [Elektronski vir]
    Močnik, Dijana
In the paper, we examine the empirical evidence on the relationship between economic development and different so called information and communication technology (ICT) indicators for which the ... majority of the literature presupposes that may have a great impact on economic development. According to our hypothesis that selected indicators might impact economic development differently regarding different level of economic development, estimations on strength of the relationships were made separately for seven different groups of countries. The results show that ICT variables explain the majority of economic development, but only in the average developed countries. However, the results also show that ICT variables explain only a lesser extent of the variability of economic development in the least- and the most developed countries. The insignificance of the ICT factors in the least developed countries may be considered as evidence of the considerable lag in the spread of ICT, while in the most developed countries as an indicator that ICT has become general purpose technology important for the long-run development that might not be mirrored in higher productivity (GDP p.c.) any more. The empirical results of out research can be regarded as a contribution in clarifying the impact of ICT in relation to economic development.
