  • XPS and sorption measurements of plasma-treated regenerated cellulose fabrics and ageing effects [Elektronski vir]
    Peršin Fratnik, Zdenka ...
The aim of the present research was to find out to what extent the plasma activation procedure is appropriate for the surface activation of regenerated cellulose textile fabrics, in regard to later ... chitosan adsorption and binding. Oxygen plasma treatment was applied for the surface activation of regenerated cellulose fibrous materials in order to obtain appropriate amounts of carbonyl or aldehyde groups as the chitosan binding sites. Differences in the surfaces' chemical composition were monitored using XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) analysis, and surface adsorption properties using contact angles were determined by tensiometry. The effectiveness of the chitosan treatment or the amount of active amino groups on the chitosan treated samples, respectively, was investigated by adsorption of the test acid dye (Acid Orange 7) using VIS spectroscopy. In order to monitor the time-dependency of the plasma activation effect, the surface chemical composition, water contact angles and the active amino groups' amounts' of adsorbed chitosan were investigated as a function of time. The contact angles for all the samples decreased exceedingly after the plasma treatment, mostly for the lyocell and viscose fabric samples (by about 325%). After 24 h and 96 h the contact angles did not change significantly. After chitosan treatment, the amounts of the fabric samplesć accessible amino groups, previously activated by oxygen plasma, were significantly higher (by about 100%) in comparison to non-activated samples treated with chitosan.
