  • The influence of pretreatment on the accessible amino group amount regarding cotton fibres treated with chitosan [Elektronski vir]
Strnad, Simona, 1965- ; Šauperl, Olivera ; Fras Zemljič, Lidija
The aim of this study was to find out what kind of pre-treatment is more appropriate for the later permanent chitosan binding and effective antimicrobial properties of cotton fibers. In order to ... produce appropriate amounts of carbonyl groups, fibers were oxidized by different procedures using KIO4 solutions, and adequate amount of free carboxyl groups were achieved by the treatment of fibers with BTCA. After chitosan treatment, the oxidized cotton contained app. 16 mmol /kg of accessible amino groups, on average, and BTCA treated app. 6 mmol/kg. These amounts were strongly dependent on the amounts of free and/or cross linked aldehide and carboxyl groups in the fibers prior to chitosan treatment.
