Microorganisms in wastewaters of hospital laundriesFijan, Sabina ; Šostar-Turk, SonjaDetermining microorganisms in laundry water is an important factor in maintaining an appropriate level of hygiene in laundry water. It is important that the bio-burden of laundry water isnćt ... unnecessarily increased by using infected water from contaminated ,lters for ion-exchange in the softening plant or from untreated water from streams, rivers, lakes, or underground aquifers, thus decreasing the antimicrobial washing e+ect. )e antimicrobial washing e+ect, which must be achieved because textiles from hospitals contain many kinds of pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses, is also evident from the water from the extract press. In the research we conducted a total microbiological count in water samples using the pour plate method and a diferentiation of the formed microorganisms using general microbiological methods. We also assessed the presence of viruses using RT-PCR and second round PCR for gene amplification using specific primers, succeeding ultrafiltration and RNA isolation. We found that the total microbiological count exceeded the recommended value of 100 colony forming units (CFU) per mL in some samples of waters after the extract press; therefore these investigated washing programs didn't have a sufficient chemo-thermal disinfection efect. We also found members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, an autochthonic water microorganism Pseudomonas aeruginosa and also rotaviral RNA. We can conclude that certain investigated laundries should improve their washing processes in order to achieve an antimicrobial washing e+ect. On the other hand several laundries had su:cient antimicrobial laundering procedures and comply with demanded standards.Source: Symposium proceedings [Elektronski vir] (Str. 122-128)Type of material - conference contribution ; adult, seriousPublish date - 2010Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 14176278
