Use of modern communication technologies in combination with inteligent expert system in technical education

Information technology, through networking, knowledge-based systems, interactive multimedia, and other technologies, will play an increasingly important role in the way that education is taught and ...delivered to the student. Through these technologies, the student will be placed in an "active" role, as opposite to a "passive" environment of one-way lecturing. The teacher can then act as a facilitator instead of merely a one-way communicator. The paper presents the expert system STATEXS for education on dimensioning, optimization and the manufacture of gears and gearing. After completion of calculations and the optimisation of gears, or gear pairs, one of the most difficult operations follows, i. e. the manufacture of the product with theoretical determined and optimised properties. To this end, at our Faculty we have also started to develop an expert system b the field of manufacture of various products of demanding shapes. By means of our expert system (ES), the individual teachers will be able to saccessfully plan and execute optimal lessons for various subjects. It will enable the teachers to have complex approach to teaching, but it will be also useful to the students. The ES remains in the stage of development, testing and complementing. It is built so that it can be continuously up-graded.
