  • Slovene images of the United States from the 1830s to the 1930s
    Klemenčič, Matjaž, 1955-
The first reports published in the Slovene ethnic territory on the United States were written by Slovene Catholic missionaries in the 1830s. Immigrants sent home numerous letters describing America, ... which were also published in Slovene newspapers. The first detailed description of US history, economy, politics etc., as well as a description of Slovene settlements in the United States was published in 1913 by Fr. Jurij Trunk. Also in 1913, the Slovene Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter on Slovene emigration to the USA. After World War 1, emigrants continued to send letters with descriptions of America. Also returnees and visitors from the USA told stories about it. Later, in the 1930s, Slovenes read books on America, especially translations of books by Louis Adamic, an American author of Slovene origin.
