  • SAXS study of smectic ordering in n-CB liquid crystals [Elektronski vir]
Zidanšek, Aleksander ; Lahajnar, Gojmir ; Kralj, Samo
Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a useful tool for the detection of smectic ordering in liquid crystals. Octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) and dodecylcyanobiphenyl (12CB) liquid crystals confined to ... controlled-pore glasses (CPG) of various pore diameters between 24 nm and 300 nm around the nematic - smectic A phase and isotropic - smectic A phase transitions, respectively, represent an excellent case study model for SAXS experiments. From measured SAXS patterns it is possible to obtain some information about the character of the phase transition and the structure of smectic layers, in particular the distance between the smectic layers, the smectic order parameter and the smectic correlation length. This method is also potentially applicable for the detection and analysis of defects in smectic structure.
