  • Hippies, drugs, and astrology in the songs, music, and poetry of the 1960s
    Kennedy, Victor
Popular music lyrics can give an idea of the concems of an era. The haircuts, clothes, and flowers of the hippies of the nineteen-sixties may look comical to us today, after watching Austin Powers, ... but the song lyrics reveal an awareness of more than just peace and love. Many songwriters wrote critically of social movements like the counterculture, the drug culture, and opposition to the Vietnam War. This paper will examine some of those songs and the arguments they contain for and against the counterculture.
