  • Are dyed textiles ecological unfriendly?
Tušek, Lidija ; Golob, Vera, 1954-2005 ; Jeler, Slava
The scientifically unverified and unproved rumors that textile industry poisons its customers with its products has led to a confusion on the market and some doubts have remained uncleared. As most ... of the textiles are dyed, the ecological properties of dyes are of prime interest to the manufacturers as well as to the customers. The information this paper brings is addressed to both. In the evaluation of environment friendly dyes three issues must be considered:toxicity, carcinogenicity and allergic reactions. Dyes for dyeing and printing are usually non-toxic. Problems may occur if toxic dye decomposition products are formed. According to ETA (Ecological and Toxicological Association of the Dyestuffs Manufacturing Industry) only a few dyes are toxic, but they are no longer produced in Europe.
