  • HAZ fracture toughness designing for the derivation of acceptance level for defects in fusion welds
    Gliha, Vladimir
The load carrying capacity of welded structures is dependent on the strength of weld joints. The reasons are crack-like defects in fusion welds and the embrittlement of material. Due to the ... embrittlement caused ty the welding HAZ is weak part of weld joints especially that referred to as the HAZ next to the fusion line. The principles of fracture mechanics enable the assessment of the interaction between the crack-like defect and stress. The HAZ material fracture toughness and its hardness are often the decesive parameters of the load carrying capacity of welded structures with the crack-like defects in the HAZ. The allowable crack size can be determined by the properties of the HAZ material with the defect, the level of design stress, the shape of welded structure and actual conditions of welds. A wise approach to the acceptance criteria of crack-like defects used by an NDE has to include the derivation of allowable crack size in the welds at the design stress level taking into account the conditions of weld joints (as-welded, stress relieved). In the present paper the case of HAZ fracture toughness designing for the derivation of acceptance level for defects in fusion welds is represent. The experimentalwork was focused to the CGHAZ and recrystallized former cghaz on a high strength structural steel.
