  • Contribution to the Si-Sm phase diagram

    The constitution of the alloys in the silicon-rich corner of the Si-Sm phase diagrams was examined, using optical microscopy, differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray ... diffraction, and microhardness measurements. The microstructure of the hypoeutectic alloys showed the presence of the primary crystallized silicon and binary (▫$\beta$▫Si+▫$\alpha$▫-SmS▫$i_2$▫) eutectic. The eutectic of the rod-like shape, was formed at 1212,5°C, and 61,4 mass % Si and 38,6 mass % Sm. With the X-ray diffraction technique and energy dispersive spectroscopy the maximum solid solubility of samarium of 0,02 at. % (0.11 mass %) in silicon was determined.
