Temperature distribution in an anode baking furnace and its influence on the properties of carbon anodes

In this work we measured the temperature distribution in the closed top vertical anode baking furnace in Talum, Kidričevo. It was found that the uneven temperature distribution prevailed in the anode ...baking furnace, which in turn considerably increased the variation of anode properties and lead to different problems, such as frequent horizontal cracking and large net anode consumption. The results confirmed the correlation betwen the maximum heating rate from 200 oC and 600 oC and the probability of anode horizontal cracking in an electrolysis cell, and between the final baking temperature and the air-reactivity. The direct temperature measurement in the anode baking furnace provides useful information and correlation to be essential in improving the anode baking furnace control system and optimization of the flue gas flow system.
