Sewing threads used in car insustry for interior furnishing have to comply with severe specific requirements stated in car industry regulations, which prescribe high thread strength after artificial ...ageing and colour fastness to light at high temperatures. The required physical properties of threads depend on the material composition of sewing threads and on the optimization of mechanical parameters of the production process. PA 6.6 sewing threads are produced from twisted filaments: three twisted filaments are plied and twisted again. In the optimization of the mechanical parameters of twisting the fact that the breaking force of the raw thread should be at least 10% higher than that of the end product has to be considered. The colour fastness to light is influenced by dyestuff constitution used for dyeing of sewing threads. Due to their good colour fastness only selected metal-complex dyes 1:2 are suitable for PA sewing threads for car industry. Therefore from the range of BEMAPLEX dyes (Prodicer BEZEMA), which include Co-and Cr complexes, eight dyes were tested and their dyeing properties were evaluated. The light fastness of dyed samples and the effect of ageing on thread strength were determined according to DIN 75202 (FAKRA) which specifies severe testing conditions that appear in car interior during summertime and cause a drop of thread strength and photodegradation of non- fast dyes. Based on the results of experimental work a selection of 1:2 metal complex dyes that are suitable for dyeing PA 6.6 threads to be used in car industry is proposed.
