  • Compatibilization of recycled polyethylene/polystyrene blends
    Radonjič, Gregor ; Gubeljak, Nenad
The compatibilizing effects of styrene\rubber block copolymers poly (styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS), poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS), and ... poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-propylene) (SEP) on the morphology and mechanical properties of immiscibile blends produced from recycled low-density polyethylene (PE-HD) with 20 wt.-% of polystyrene (PS) were investigated. The morpholgy of the studied blends was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that used copolymers were efficient in reducing the size of the dispersed phase and improving adhesion between PE and PS phases. Used block copolymers showed different compatibilization effectiveness in terms of mechanical property changes compared to noncompatibilized blends. It was found that SEBS was the most efficient compatibilizer for recycled PE-LD\PS 80\20 blend were greatly improved due to morphological changes and increased interfacial adhesion. The same compatibilizers were much less effective in improving the mechanical properties of the recyled PE-HD\PS 80\20 blend.A relative improvement of tensile properties by the addition of 10 wr.% of SBS to PE-LD\PS 80\20 blend prepared via compression moulding as well as injection moulding was similar except for elongation at break where compression molded samples exhibited higher values.
