  • Generalised computational analysis of contact fatigue initiation of mechanical elements
    Šraml, Matjaž ...
A generalised computational model for analysis of contact fatigue damage initiation on mechanical elements is presented. The model is based on continuum mechanics of assumed homogenous and elastic ... material. The finite element method is used to determine the true stress loading cycles for material points at various depths under the contact surface as a consequence of the moving contact loading. Normal contact loading is evaluated according to the Hertzian theory, while the frictional forces are considered with the Coulomb friction law. The number of loading cycles for fatigue damage initiation is determined with the Coffin-Manson fatigue model. A fundamental contact problem of a cylinder and flat surface is analysed, where influence of friction on fatigue damage initiation is closely examined. It has been determined that the influence of friction can be neglected for material points at depths larger than 1,4 a and that higher friction leads to earlier initial fatigue damage closer to the contact surface, where the limiting value of friction coefficient for fatigue crack initiation on the contact surface is equal to 0,3.
