Constructing the switchgear with the assistance of calculation of electric field is gaining on value. Course of decreasing of non-homogeneous electric field strength with software package EleFAnT2D ...for 24 kV compression switch is given in the article. Calculations are done for open and closed switch while testing at rated lightning impulse voltage of 125 kV. Problems occur at upper contact with switch open. Electric field strength is limited with additional protective cover, with metal on the inner side and at the same potential as the contact. With this we achieve that electric field strength is equally distributed and within anticipated limits of air insulation strength. With switch open the field distributes along the whole length of the switch. Electric field values are lower than air insulation strength.
