  • Grass fibres in textile applications?
    Sfiligoj-Smole, Majda ...
However, because of increasing environmental consciousness and demands of legislative authorities the manufacture, use and removal of traditional materials are considered more critically. From this ... point of view the importance of sustainable raw materials is every day higher due to their biological degradability and as they represent an excellent alternative raw material for different textile end technical end uses. The natural cellulose fibres as flax, hemp, jute, etc. have successfully proven their qualities when taking into account also the ecological view of fibre materials. In addition, we have tested some alternative sources for fibre production, e.g. different grass species and wheat. In the article a detailed study of elementary grass fibres isolated from different grass sorts, i.e. Ryegrass, Wheat grass, Trefoil and Lucerne is given. The fibre-samples were obtained in a bio-refinery, after the liquid phase containing proteins and lactic acid was eliminated from the si/ed and green grasses, respectively. Different processes of grass fibres separation from the rest of the plant were studied (e.g. acidic, alkaline and enzymatic treatment). The characterisation of fibres involving physical properties, i.e., geometrical and mechanical properties was performed.
