Patriotism combines a deep concern for the existence and flourishing of one's own country with a belief that one may, or even should, give priority, in the promotion of other's well-being, or in ...satisfaction of others' needs and interests, or in protection of others' rights (or whatever the principal goal of morality) to the well-being, needs, interests, rights, of one's fellow citizens over those of others. Patriotism, just like any other form of partiality, calls for a moral justification. The paper critically assesses the proposal to ground (not just permissibility, but also) obligatoriness of patriotic partiality in the alleged intrinsic value of the appropriate relation of citizenship. It is thereby argued that this line of argumentation is flawed for its inability to meet two modest, intuitively appealing requirements that every account of special duties to compatriots in terms of intrinsic value of citizenship should be able to meet
