We have recently experienced a case of non-A non-B posttransfution hepatitis (NANB-PTH) having developed liver cirrhosis during the follow-up period of several years. Such a follow-up case is a few in the literatures. A 69-year-old female was transfused 13 units of blood when she received hysterectomy because of carcinoma of the uterus. At that time, the liver surface of the patient was visibly smooth. Thirty-five days after the blood transfusion, serum transaminase levels began to elevate, but she was almost asymptomatic and had no jaundice. No serological evidence of infection of HAV, CMV, or EBV was obtained. Since then, serum transaminases have fluctuated with s-GPT peak levels of 300 to 500IU/L and never returned to normal levels as long as about 3 years. Three years and 4 months after the onset of the disease, the liver already showed a completely cirrhotic feature on both laparoscopy and liver biopsy.
