Multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MRE) are recognized as one of the greatest threats to human health worldwide. The pooled prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) colonization in the community has been estimated at 14% with a significant increasing trend of 5.4% annually. The patient gut flora represents the main reservoir of MRE in hospitalized patients. This gut reservoir is abundant, continuous, and dynamic and depends on tier factors (ie, comorbidities and the exposure to antibiotics), with a natural restoration of the normal flora over time.
