    In 1959 the Stearns and Foster Company released a print advertisement for Mountain Mist, its commercial quilt batting.¹ While this in itself was not an unusual practice — Mountain Mist had been synonymous with quilting for a century and had helped standardize quilting patterns in the United States through the quilt patterns printed on its packaging paper — the occasion was unique.² The ad, in essence, commemorated and commercialized a historical moment: the admission of Hawai‘i as a state into the United States of America.
