An obituary for Sgt Michael M. Merila, who died on Feb 16, 2004 when Merila's convoy was attacked near Tal Afar, Iraq by enemy combatants using an improvised explosive device, is presented. Merila, along with his squadron was deployed to Iraq in Nov 2003. He worked and lived with the Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, sharing their hardships and dangers.
