(Autorenreferat)- 'In surveying special populations, the gross sample is of special importance. For general opinion polls, a body of experience and information is available; practical and methodological experience, aggregate data on the target population and representative surveys already carried out. For special population studies, this is often not the case. A number of difficulties arising from this are discussed and strategies proposed to deal with them, on the basis of a nation-wide criminological study of German and non-German restaurant owners. The study dealt with victimisation in a personal and professional context (especially corruption and extortion, e.g., demanding protection money). Problems start early - when choosing suitable sources of addresses. A comparison of the source of addresses used for the study (telephone directory yellow pages) with lists obtained from selected local government authorities shows that although only minor distortions were found in the old federal states, the gross sample in the new states cannot be considered to be representative, using the criterion of lists from local authorities. Further attempts to validate the sample using data obtained from the police (expert estimates) indicate that businesses especially at risk for the type of crime investigated are not systematically under-represented in the yellow pages.'
