Visoko število umrlih vseh stanov je postalo vsakdanja realnost, ničkolikokrat upodobljena v znamenitem mrtvaškem plesu. Mrtvaški ples se je v zgodovini likovne umetnosti pojavil najprej v Franciji (ok. 1425), nato pa se je bliskovito razširil po skorajda vsej Evropi.Freska Mrtvaški ples v cerkvi sv. Trojice v Hrastovlju je verjetno nastala pod vtisom srednjeveških epidemij kuge. Prikazuje sprevod, v katerem se proti odprtemu grobu pomikajo ljudje različnih stanov in starosti. Spremlja jih neizprosna koščena gospa, ki se ne ozira na stan in je ni mogoče podkupiti. Liki opominjajo na dejstvo, da so človeška življenja krhka in da je slava zemeljskega življenja jalova.
