  • Nitrogen and ortho-phosphate removal from municipal wastewater with pig slurry in batch reactor
    Tepuš, Brigita ; Roš, Milenko
We studied the biological nitrogen removal in high-strength nitrogenous wastewater. For this purpose, we used wastewater that includes 60% of household water, 38% of industrial wastewater and 2% of ... pig slurry. The wastewater was treated in a batch reactor of volume 6 L. The aeration time of wastewater was given in pulses, 1h aeration (then 1h without aeration), 2h aeration (and 2h without aeration), 3h aeration (and 2h without aeration), and 4h aeration (and 1h without aeration). No additional carbon source was used. The effect of COD treatment was more than 90% of ammonium nitrogen removal, and more than 80% of Kjeldahl nitrogen removal. The best results were received in the system with 1h aeration and 1h without aeration. In effluent the concentration of total nitrogen was less than 10 mg/L. The results of ortho-phosphate removal were 76% in 1+1 system, 24 % in 2+2 system, 55 % in 3+2 system and 79 % in 4+1 system, respectively. In all samples the concentration of ortho-phosphate in the effluent was more than 1 mg/L.
