  • Deep cryogenic treatment of metallic materials in automotive applications [Elektronski vir] : a review
Jovičević Klug, Patricia ; Podgornik, Bojan, 1970-
In automotive industry, every year there is an increasing demand on performance improvement, material life cycle, cost savings, environmental safety and reduction of material consumption. In ... automotive industry, ferrous metals (steels) and non-ferrous alloys (aluminum, titanium, nickel etc.) are used as components, at which both groups can be treated by deep cryogenic treatment (DCT). In researches conducted DCT have shown to reduce density of defects in crystal structure, increase wear resistance of material, increase hardness, improve toughness, and reduce tensile strength and corrosion resistance. However, some researchers also reported results that show no change in material properties (toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance, etc.) or even deterioration when subjected to DCT. This leads to a lack of consistency and reliability of the treatment process, which is needed for its integration in industry. Nevertheless, to prove with certainty the resulting outcome on the material properties and understanding the reasons for the variation of this effect on metallic materials, a more systematical approach and testing with different variables (treatment technique, temperature, holding time, etc.) should be conducted in the future. In this review, different approaches of DCT on different materials in automotive industry were examined in order to indicate effects on the material performance during DCT. Furthermore, it provides a synopsis that contests current results and provides future possibilities to evolve and standardize this approach for automotive industry.
