  • The attitude of teacher educators and student teachers towards the use of digital technologies for the purposes of learning and teaching and their self-assessment of competence in the use of digital technologies
Štemberger, Tina ; Čotar Konrad, Sonja
The purpose of the study was to determine what attitudes specifically Slovenian teacher educators and student teachers hold towards using digital technologies (DT) in education, their self-reported ... proficiency in using DT in education and to what extent their attitudes towards using DT in education predict their self-reported proficiency in using DT. We measured the attitudes towards using DT in education through four dimensions for student teachers: i.) Attitude towards using DT for personalized teaching and learning, ii.) Attitude towards using DT to support assessment and critical thinking, iii.) Attitude towards using DT to support students’ learning, and iv.) Attitude towards using DT for supporting collaborative learning, for teacher educators we also measured their i.) Attitude towards using DT for teaching. Self-reported proficiency in using digital technology was measured on four groups of DT: i.) Digital resources, ii.) Communication tools, iii.) Digital tools and iv.) Online learning tools. The results point to the fact that the teacher educators self-reported being more proficient in using DT that do not demand an advanced level of competence; a lower level of proficiency was reported in using DT that included the co-construction and co-creation of teaching and learning materials. The results also show that Slovenian student teachers predominantly hold positive attitudes towards using DT in education, but they assess themselves as low-level users. Also, the student teachers’ attitudes towards using DT in education were proved as an important predictor of their level of proficiency in using DT.
